The image quickly spread across social media platforms and became the subject of countless parodies and remixes. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the history of the Pitt Penn State meme and explore its lasting impact on internet culture.

The Origins of the Meme

The Pitt Penn State meme first appeared in 2013, during a college football game between the two Pennsylvania universities. The image was captured by a photographer and quickly began circulating on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. The image’s popularity was fueled by the fact that it perfectly captured the rivalry between the two schools, which had been building for decades.

As the meme began to gain traction, people began creating their own versions of the sign, inserting different phrases and captions to make the image their own. Some of the most popular variations included “Ohio State is a fraud” and “Michigan is overrated”. The meme became so popular that it even caught the attention of national news outlets, who covered the phenomenon in their broadcasts and articles.

The Impact of the Meme

One of the reasons the Pitt Penn State meme was so successful was because it tapped into a universal sentiment: the desire to express one’s superiority over a rival. The meme allowed people to do this in a humorous and creative way, which is why it resonated with so many people. It also helped that the image was easy to modify, making it accessible to people with varying levels of technical skills.

As the meme continued to spread, it became a cultural touchstone for a generation of internet users. People began using the image to express their opinions on everything from politics to pop culture, inserting their own captions and phrases to make their point. The meme even spawned a number of derivative works, including t-shirts, mugs, and other merchandise.
