The Rise of Big Bird Memes
Big Bird has been a staple of children’s television since the debut of Sesame Street in 1969. However, it wasn’t until the rise of social media that Big Bird memes began to gain popularity. In 2012, during the presidential election, Big Bird became a political talking point when Mitt Romney mentioned that he would cut funding to PBS, the network that airs Sesame Street. This sparked a wave of Big Bird memes, with many people using the character to make political statements.
Since then, Big Bird has continued to be a popular meme subject. The character’s innocence and naivety make him the perfect canvas for humorous and often absurd memes. These memes often feature Big Bird in unusual situations or with unexpected captions. For example, a popular Big Bird meme features the character with the caption “when you finally find the meme template you’ve been searching for.” The absurdity of the caption paired with Big Bird’s innocent expression makes for a hilarious meme.
