The year is 2023 and the internet is still a hub for viral trends and memes. One such trend that has taken over social media is the Uncut Gems meme on TikTok. For those who may not be familiar, Uncut Gems is a 2019 American crime thriller film directed by Josh and Benny Safdie, starring Adam Sandler as a jeweler and gambling addict in New York City’s Diamond District.
The film received critical acclaim for its intense plot and Sandler’s performance, but it also spawned a new wave of memes that have taken over TikTok in 2023. The basic premise of the meme involves using a specific scene from the film where Sandler’s character is on the phone and becomes increasingly agitated and frantic.

The Origin of the Meme
The scene in question has been used in a variety of ways, but it typically involves someone pretending to be on the phone and mimicking Sandler’s frantic behavior. The first known use of this particular clip on TikTok was by user @jakeandty19 in 2022, but it wasn’t until early 2023 that the trend really took off.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why this particular clip became so popular, but it likely has to do with the relatable nature of the character’s stress and anxiety. In a world where many people are constantly on their phones and dealing with the pressures of work and social media, the Uncut Gems meme provides a humorous outlet for those feelings.
How the Meme Spread
As with most viral trends, the Uncut Gems meme spread quickly on TikTok thanks to the platform’s algorithm and the way it promotes popular content. Other users began to see the trend and started creating their own versions of the meme, often with their own unique twists and variations.
One popular variation of the meme involves using the scene to express frustration with technology or other modern conveniences. For example, a user might pretend to be on the phone with customer service, mimicking Sandler’s frantic behavior as they try to navigate an automated phone tree.
Response from Fans and Critics
The Uncut Gems meme has been met with mixed reactions from fans and critics. Some people find it hilarious and a great way to relieve stress, while others see it as yet another example of the internet’s obsession with turning everything into a meme.
One critic wrote, “While I appreciate the humor and creativity behind the Uncut Gems meme, I worry that it’s yet another example of our culture’s tendency to reduce complex emotions and experiences to simplistic, bite-sized pieces of content.”
However, many fans of the trend argue that it’s simply a harmless way to have fun and connect with others online. As one user put it, “I love the Uncut Gems meme because it’s so relatable. We all have moments where we feel like we’re on the verge of a breakdown, and this meme lets us share that feeling in a fun and lighthearted way.”
