The Origins of Meme Songs
The term “meme” was coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book, “The Selfish Gene.” Dawkins used the term to refer to any cultural entity that could be transmitted from one individual to another, much like a gene. In the context of the internet, memes are typically images or videos that are shared and remixed across social media platforms.
One of the earliest examples of a meme song is “All Your Base Are Belong to Us,” which originated from a poorly translated video game from the 1990s. The song became popular in the early 2000s and has since been remixed and mashed up countless times.
The Rise of Rickrolling
Perhaps the most famous of all meme songs is Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The song became the subject of a phenomenon known as “rickrolling,” in which unsuspecting internet users are tricked into clicking a link that leads them to the music video for the song. Rickrolling first became popular in 2007 and has since become one of the most recognizable memes on the internet.
“Never Gonna Give You Up” has also had a lasting impact on popular culture. In recent years, the song has been used in commercials, TV shows, and even political campaigns.
The Legacy of “Nyan Cat”
Another classic meme song is the “Nyan Cat” theme, which features a cat with a Pop-Tart body flying through space, leaving a rainbow trail behind it. The song was originally created by a user on the website 4chan and quickly became a viral sensation.
“Nyan Cat” has since become a staple of internet culture, with countless remixes and versions of the song available online. The song has even been used in video games and as the soundtrack for a popular TV show in Japan.
The Enduring Appeal of Classic Meme Songs
So why do these meme songs continue to be popular years after they first went viral? For one thing, they’re catchy and memorable. The repetitive nature of many meme songs makes them easy to remember and impossible to forget.
Additionally, meme songs often have an element of humor or absurdity that makes them appealing to a wide audience. For example, the “Nyan Cat” theme is both cute and ridiculous, which makes it entertaining to watch and listen to.
