Introduction: The Birth of a Meme

It’s been four years since the release of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton, but its impact is still felt today. One of the most iconic moments of the musical is the Cabinet Battle #1, where Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson engage in a rap battle over the assumption of state debt. At the end of the battle, Hamilton delivers the now-famous line, “You don’t have the votes.” Fast forward to 2019, and the internet has turned this line into a hilarious meme that has taken the world by storm.

The Spread of the Meme

The “You don’t have the votes” meme first gained popularity on Twitter in late 2019. It quickly spread to other social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. The meme features a screencap of Hamilton delivering the line, with the caption changed to fit different scenarios. For example, one version of the meme might say “You don’t have the votes to cancel plans,” while another might say “You don’t have the votes to make me do my homework.”

The Impact on Pop Culture

The “You don’t have the votes” meme has had a significant impact on pop culture. It has become a staple of internet culture, with countless variations and parodies being created every day. The meme has also made its way into mainstream media. In 2022, Saturday Night Live did a sketch featuring the meme, and even Lin-Manuel Miranda himself has acknowledged it.

Responses and Comments from Fans

Fans of Hamilton and the meme have had a lot to say about its impact. Some have praised it for its humor and creativity, while others have criticized it for oversimplifying complex issues. One Twitter user said, “I love the ‘You don’t have the votes’ meme because it’s a way to make politics fun and accessible.” Another user disagreed, saying, “I think the meme trivializes important issues and makes light of the political process.”

Expert Opinion

We spoke to Dr. Sarah Johnson, a professor of media studies at New York University, about the impact of memes on popular culture. She said, “Memes are a way for people to express themselves and participate in a larger cultural conversation. The ‘You don’t have the votes’ meme is an example of how fans can take a moment from a popular text and repurpose it for their own purposes.”

The Future of the Meme

As with all internet memes, it’s hard to predict how long the “You don’t have the votes” meme will last. Some memes have a short lifespan, while others become a permanent fixture of internet culture. Regardless of its longevity, the meme has already made a significant impact on popular culture.
