Origins of the Meme
In the film, the villain Thanos seeks to obtain all six Infinity Stones and use them to wipe out half of all life in the universe. Despite the efforts of the Avengers and their allies, Thanos ultimately succeeds in his mission and snaps his fingers, causing many of the heroes to disintegrate into dust. In the aftermath of this event, Thanos has a conversation with a young Gamora, who asks him what it cost to achieve his goal. Thanos responds with the now-famous line, “Everything.”
Shortly after the film’s release in 2018, the “What Did It Cost?” meme began to gain traction. The meme typically involves a scenario in which someone asks for something, and the other person responds with “Everything,” accompanied by a picture of Thanos.
