In 2018, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) dropped one of its most iconic films, Avengers: Infinity War. The movie featured the villain Thanos, who was on a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones and wipe out half of all life in the universe to bring balance to it. Thanos’ snap of his fingers not only wiped out half of the MCU’s heroes but also created a meme that has lasted until today.
The Birth of the Thanos Meme
The “What Did It Cost?” meme is one of the most popular memes that emerged from Infinity War. It is a screenshot of Thanos and his adopted daughter Gamora talking about the cost of getting the Soul Stone. The conversation goes:
Thanos: “In order to take the stone, you must lose that which you love. An everlasting exchange.”
Gamora: “A soul for a soul.”
Thanos: “We have an agreement then.”
The scene ends with a shot of Gamora’s lifeless body lying on the ground, leaving Thanos to shed a tear and say, “What did it cost? Everything.”
The meme started with people using the line, “What did it cost? Everything” as a response to questions that had a high price, figuratively or literally. It then evolved to people inserting the phrase into various pop culture references or using it to express their own sacrifices for a goal.
The Popularity of the Meme
The Thanos meme quickly went viral, and it’s not hard to see why. It encapsulates the idea of making tough sacrifices for a greater good, which is a theme that resonates with many people. The meme also appeals to pop culture enthusiasts who love to reference movies, TV shows, or books in their daily lives.
The meme’s popularity has also been fueled by the fact that it’s easy to understand, even for people who have never seen Infinity War. The phrase “What did it cost? Everything” is simple but profound, and it can be applied to various situations.
The Impact of the Meme
The Thanos meme has had a significant impact on pop culture since its inception. It has become a staple in the meme community, and it’s still being used today, three years after the release of Infinity War.
Aside from its popularity, the meme has also inspired people to create their own versions of it. Some have used the meme to express their own struggles and sacrifices, while others have used it to parody pop culture references.
The Future of the Meme
The Thanos meme has already had a long life, but its future is uncertain. It’s possible that it will continue to be used for years to come, but it’s also possible that it will eventually fade away.
Whatever happens, the Thanos meme will always be remembered as one of the most iconic memes of all time. It has left a lasting impact on pop culture and has given people a way to express their sacrifices and struggles in a simple but meaningful way.
