How It All Started
Like most memes, the “Sounds Good” cat meme has an interesting origin story. It all began when a photo of a cat named Smudge, owned by graphic designer Miranda Stillabower, was posted on Tumblr in 2018. The photo showed Smudge looking unimpressed while sitting next to a plate of vegetables, with the caption “he no like vegetals.”
Fast forward to 2019, when Twitter user @MISSINGEGIRL stumbled upon the photo and decided to use it as a reaction meme. She tweeted a screenshot of a Tumblr post that showed a couple arguing over whether or not to add ketchup to their mac and cheese, with the caption “he no like vegetals” and Smudge’s photo as the punchline. The tweet went viral, and the rest is history.
The Appeal of the Meme
What makes the “Sounds Good” cat meme so appealing? For one, it taps into the universal experience of making a decision and confidently saying “sounds good” even if you’re not entirely sure about it. The cat’s cool and collected demeanor also adds to its charm, making it the perfect reaction image for various situations.
Moreover, the meme’s popularity is also tied to the internet’s obsession with cats. According to a study by the American Pet Products Association, around 94 million households in the US own cats, making them the second most popular pet after dogs. It’s not surprising, then, that a meme featuring a cat would resonate with so many people.
