The gif has become a staple in internet culture and is used to express surprise, shock, and confusion.

Another reason why the surprised meme gif has become so popular is its simplicity. The gif is just a few seconds long, but it packs a punch. It’s an easy way to express a complex emotion without having to type out a long message.
