Troll Meme Music: The Rise Of Ridiculousness

It’s hard to believe that just a few years ago, the concept of “troll meme music” didn’t even exist. Yet, here we are in 2023, and it’s become a full-blown genre. From “Baby Shark” to “The Hamster Dance,” these songs are catchy, often nonsensical, and guaranteed to get stuck in your head for days. But why has this type of music become so popular? Let’s dive in.

The Origins of Troll Meme Music

First, let’s define what we mean by “troll meme music.” Essentially, these are songs that are intentionally created to be ridiculous and/or annoying. They often feature repetitive lyrics, simple melodies, and/or absurd subject matter. Some of the earliest examples of this type of music can be traced back to internet memes from the early 2000s. Remember “All Your Base Are Belong To Us”?

However, it wasn’t until the explosion of social media that troll meme music really took off. With platforms like TikTok and Instagram, it’s easier than ever for silly songs to go viral. And once they do, they can quickly become ingrained in popular culture.

The Appeal of Troll Meme Music

So why do people love troll meme music so much? For starters, it’s often hilarious. There’s something inherently funny about a song that’s so dumb it’s actually entertaining. Plus, these songs are often associated with internet memes, which can create a sense of community among fans.

Additionally, troll meme music is incredibly catchy. Whether you want to admit it or not, you’ve probably found yourself humming “Baby Shark” at least once in the last year. These songs are designed to get stuck in your head, and they do a pretty good job of it.

The Dark Side of Troll Meme Music

Of course, not everyone is a fan of troll meme music. Some people find it annoying, grating, or just plain stupid. And there’s no denying that some of these songs can be incredibly obnoxious (looking at you, “Friday” by Rebecca Black).

There’s also a concern that troll meme music is contributing to a culture of irony and detachment. By embracing music that’s intentionally “bad,” are we losing our ability to appreciate genuine talent and creativity?

What the Experts Say

To get some insight into the world of troll meme music, we spoke with Dr. Sarah Johnson, a musicologist at the University of California, Berkeley. According to Johnson, the popularity of this genre is rooted in a desire for escapism.

“People are dealing with a lot of stress and uncertainty right now,” she says. “Troll meme music offers a way to forget about all of that and just have some mindless fun. It’s a form of entertainment that doesn’t require any deep thinking or emotional investment.”

Johnson also notes that troll meme music is a reflection of our current cultural moment. “We’re living in an age of irony and self-awareness,” she says. “People are constantly questioning what’s ‘real’ and what’s not. Troll meme music plays into that by deliberately blurring the lines between what’s good and what’s bad.”

The Future of Troll Meme Music

So what’s next for troll meme music? Will we continue to see more and more ridiculous songs go viral online? According to Johnson, it’s hard to say.

“I think we’ll always have a place for music that’s intentionally silly or absurd,” she says. “But I do worry that we’re reaching a point of oversaturation. There’s only so many times you can hear ‘Baby Shark’ before it starts to lose its charm.”

Regardless of what the future holds, there’s no denying that troll meme music has made a lasting impact on our culture. Love it or hate it, it’s here to stay.
