The Mexican national soccer team, also known as “El Tri,” has a rich history of success on the pitch. From their first World Cup appearance in 1930 to their most recent victory in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the team has captured the hearts of soccer fans around the world. But along with their triumphs, the team has also spawned a cultural phenomenon: memes.

The Birth of Mexican National Team Memes

The origins of Mexican national team memes can be traced back to the early days of the internet. As social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook gained popularity in the early 2010s, fans began sharing humorous images and videos featuring their favorite players. These memes often poked fun at the team’s shortcomings, such as their inability to advance past the Round of 16 in the World Cup.

One of the earliest and most enduring Mexican national team memes is the “No Era Penal” meme. This refers to a controversial penalty call during a match between Mexico and the Netherlands in the 2014 World Cup. Mexican fans were outraged when the referee awarded a penalty kick to the Netherlands in the dying minutes of the game, leading to Mexico’s elimination from the tournament. The phrase “No Era Penal,” which means “It wasn’t a penalty,” became a rallying cry for Mexican fans and has been used as a meme ever since.

The Evolution of Mexican National Team Memes

Over the years, Mexican national team memes have evolved and expanded to include a wide range of topics. Some memes focus on individual players, such as goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa’s famous saves or striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez’s goal celebrations. Others poke fun at the team’s performance in big tournaments, such as their tendency to start strong but falter in crucial matches.

One of the most popular recent memes is the “Mexican National Team Bingo” meme. This features a bingo card with various scenarios that are likely to happen during a Mexico match, such as “Chicharito scores a goal” or “Mexico concedes a late equalizer.” Fans can play along during the match and mark off the squares as they happen.

The Impact of Mexican National Team Memes

While Mexican national team memes are primarily a form of entertainment, they have also had a significant impact on the team and its fans. Memes have helped to create a sense of community among Mexican soccer fans, even those who live thousands of miles apart. They have also provided a way for fans to express their frustrations and disappointment in a lighthearted way.

But memes have also had a more tangible impact on the team itself. In recent years, Mexican players have embraced memes and used them to connect with fans. During the 2018 World Cup, several players recreated popular memes in their social media posts, including the “No Era Penal” meme. This helped to humanize the players and make them more relatable to fans.

The Future of Mexican National Team Memes

As the Mexican national team continues to compete on the world stage, it is likely that memes will continue to play a prominent role in the team’s culture. With the rise of social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, there are even more opportunities for fans to create and share memes. And as long as the team continues to capture the hearts and minds of soccer fans, there will always be something to meme about.

So whether you’re a die-hard El Tri fan or just enjoy a good laugh, be sure to keep an eye out for the latest Mexican national team memes. You never know when the next viral sensation will hit the internet.
