In the early 2020s, the internet was awash with memes featuring the image of economist John Maynard Keynes. The trend started on social media and quickly spread to forums, discussion boards, and even academic circles. The memes were often humorous, irreverent, and sometimes even subversive, and they represented a unique way of engaging with Keynesian economics and its legacy.

Who was John Maynard Keynes?

John Maynard Keynes was a British economist who lived from 1883 to 1946. He is best known for his influential theories on macroeconomics, which emphasized the importance of government intervention in economic affairs. Keynes believed that during times of economic recession, the government should increase spending and lower taxes in order to stimulate demand and create jobs. This approach, which came to be known as Keynesian economics, has had a profound impact on economic policy and thinking, both in the UK and around the world.

The rise of Keynes memes

The first Keynes meme appeared on Twitter in 2019, when a user posted an image of the economist with a humorous caption. The tweet quickly went viral, and soon other users were creating their own memes featuring Keynes. Some of the memes were based on Keynes’s actual quotes, while others were more abstract and focused on his image and persona.

The rise of Keynes memes was part of a broader trend of using memes to engage with complex ideas and theories. By using humor and irony, people were able to convey their opinions on Keynesian economics in a way that was accessible and engaging. This approach allowed people from all walks of life to participate in the conversation around economics, and it helped to break down some of the barriers that had previously existed between academic economists and the general public.

The impact of Keynes memes

While the Keynes memes were often humorous and irreverent, they also had a serious side. By engaging with Keynesian economics in a new and creative way, people were able to explore the strengths and weaknesses of the theory and consider its broader implications. The memes sparked lively debates and discussions, both online and offline, and helped to promote a greater understanding of economics among the general public.

Some economists were skeptical of the Keynes memes, arguing that they trivialized the subject matter and detracted from serious academic discourse. Others, however, saw the memes as a positive development, arguing that they helped to bring economics to a wider audience and fostered a more inclusive and democratic approach to the discipline.

The legacy of Keynes memes

Although the heyday of Keynes memes has passed, their legacy lives on. Many of the memes have been collected and preserved in online archives, and they continue to be shared and enjoyed by people around the world. Some economists have even incorporated the memes into their teaching materials, using them as a way to engage students and spark discussion in the classroom.

The Keynes memes also paved the way for other internet phenomena that have used humor and irony to engage with complex ideas and theories. From memes about quantum physics to jokes about postmodernism, the internet is now awash with humorous takes on academic subjects.
