In 2023, the internet is still buzzing with memes and viral content, but one trend that has come and gone is the John Cena meme on Reddit. Once one of the most popular memes on the site, it has since faded into obscurity. Let’s take a look back at the history of this meme and what led to its eventual decline.
The Origin of the John Cena Meme
The John Cena meme first appeared on Reddit in 2015, when a user posted a video of a prank call where Cena’s entrance music played after the caller’s name was said. This spawned a series of videos and images where Cena’s theme song would unexpectedly interrupt other content, often accompanied by the line “AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA.”
These memes quickly gained popularity on Reddit and spread to other social media platforms. It became a common practice to include the John Cena meme in videos and images as a surprise twist.
The Peak of John Cena Memes
The John Cena meme reached its peak in 2016 and 2017, where it was featured in viral videos such as “Unexpected John Cena” and “John Cena Prank Call Megamix.” These videos received millions of views and the “AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA” catchphrase became a cultural phenomenon.
Reddit was the prime platform for John Cena memes, with numerous subreddits dedicated to the meme, including r/UnexpectedCena and r/PotatoSalad. These subreddits were filled with user-generated content featuring the John Cena meme.
The Decline of John Cena Memes
Despite its popularity, the John Cena meme began to decline in 2018. Users on Reddit and other platforms began to grow tired of the meme, and it became overused and predictable. The surprise factor that made the meme so entertaining was lost.
In addition, Cena’s popularity in mainstream media began to wane, which contributed to the decline of the meme. Cena’s transition to acting and his absence from wrestling also played a role in the meme’s decline.
The Legacy of John Cena Memes
Although the John Cena meme may no longer be as popular as it once was, it still has a place in internet culture. The meme’s catchphrase has become a part of pop culture and is still referenced in various forms of media.
Some Reddit users who were active during the height of the John Cena meme still have fond memories of the trend. “I remember spending hours scrolling through r/UnexpectedCena and laughing at all the videos. It was a fun time on Reddit,” says user u/CenaFan23.
Others are glad to see the meme fade into obscurity. “I’m glad the John Cena meme is dead. It was overused and annoying,” says user u/NoCenaZone.
