The year was 2001, and the NBA Finals had just begun. The Philadelphia 76ers were facing off against the Los Angeles Lakers, led by Shaquille O’Neal and a young Kobe Bryant. The Sixers, however, had a superstar of their own in Allen Iverson. Iverson was known for his incredible scoring ability and his fearless attitude on the court.

Game 1 of the Finals was a classic. Iverson put up 48 points and led the Sixers to a stunning upset victory over the Lakers. But it was a moment in the game that would go down in history, a moment that would be immortalized in a meme that would live on for decades to come.

The Infamous Stepover

With just over a minute left in the game and the Sixers up by six, Iverson found himself matched up against Lakers guard Tyronn Lue. Iverson hit Lue with a crossover dribble, sending him stumbling to the floor. Iverson then calmly stepped over Lue as he lay on the ground, before draining a jump shot.

The moment was a perfect embodiment of Iverson’s bravado and swagger. He had just embarrassed one of the top defenders in the NBA and he wanted everyone to know it. The image of Iverson stepping over Lue quickly became iconic, and it wasn’t long before it was turned into a meme.
