It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost a decade since the infamous Kendall Love Island meme took the internet by storm. For those who don’t remember, Love Island was a popular British reality TV show that aired in the summer of 2013. One of the contestants, Kendall Rae Knight, became the subject of a viral meme thanks to a particularly cringe-worthy moment on the show.

The Moment That Started It All

During a conversation with one of the other contestants, Kendall was asked if she had ever cheated on a partner. She hesitated for a moment before admitting that she had, but quickly added that she had been “young and naive” at the time. The other contestant, Adam Collard, pounced on this admission, saying that it showed “a bit of a red flag” about Kendall’s character.

Kendall was clearly upset by this comment and tried to defend herself, but Adam wasn’t having it. He accused her of being “defensive” and “trying to play the victim.” The whole thing was incredibly uncomfortable to watch, and viewers quickly took to social media to express their outrage at Adam’s behavior.

The Birth of the Meme

But it wasn’t Kendall’s interaction with Adam that became the subject of the meme. Instead, it was a later moment in the show when Kendall was seen crying in the bathroom. A screenshot of her tear-streaked face quickly spread across social media, accompanied by captions like “When you finally realize that no one is going to love you like you love yourself” and “When you remember that you left your straighteners on.”

The meme became so popular that it even spawned its own merchandise, with t-shirts, mugs, and phone cases featuring Kendall’s crying face available for purchase online. It was a strange and surreal moment in internet culture, one that nobody could have predicted when Love Island first aired.

The Aftermath

So what happened to Kendall after the meme went viral? Well, despite the embarrassment of having her crying face plastered all over the internet, she actually came out of the experience relatively unscathed. She went on to become a successful model and influencer, with over a million followers on Instagram.

But Kendall has also been open about the toll that the Love Island experience took on her mental health. In a 2019 interview, she revealed that she had struggled with anxiety and depression after leaving the show, and that she had even contemplated suicide at one point.

The Legacy of the Meme

So why has the Kendall Love Island meme endured for so long? Part of it is undoubtedly due to the surreal nature of the image itself – Kendall’s tear-streaked face is both funny and sad at the same time. But it’s also a testament to the power of internet culture to take even the most mundane moments and turn them into something memorable.

And while the meme itself may have faded from public consciousness in recent years, it’s clear that the impact it had on Kendall’s life will never truly go away. Love Island may have been just a passing fad, but the Kendall Love Island meme will live on forever as a reminder of the strange and unpredictable nature of internet fame.
