It seems like every year, there’s a new meme trend that takes over social media. In 2023, that trend is “relapse row memes.” These memes are based on the idea of relapsing from a positive habit or behavior, and the consequences that come with it.
For example, a relapse row meme might show someone who has been working out regularly for several months, but then relapses and stops going to the gym. The meme might show the person gaining weight and feeling down about themselves.
The concept of relapse row memes has sparked a lot of discussion on social media, with some people finding them funny and relatable, while others find them triggering and harmful.

The Controversy Surrounding Relapse Row Memes
One of the main criticisms of relapse row memes is that they can be triggering for people who struggle with addiction or mental health issues. Seeing a meme that makes light of relapsing can be harmful for someone who is trying to overcome their own challenges.
On the other hand, some people argue that relapse row memes can be a helpful way to cope with setbacks and remind people that they’re not alone in their struggles.
The Rise of Self-Improvement Culture
The popularity of relapse row memes is likely tied to the rise of self-improvement culture in recent years. Social media is filled with influencers, coaches, and bloggers who encourage people to set goals, work hard, and achieve success.
While there’s nothing inherently wrong with trying to better oneself, some people feel that the pressure to constantly improve can be overwhelming and even harmful. Relapse row memes can be seen as a way to push back against this culture and remind people that setbacks are a normal part of life.
Responses from People in Recovery
For people in recovery from addiction or mental health issues, relapse row memes can be a sensitive topic. Some individuals find them triggering and unhelpful, while others see them as a way to laugh at their own mistakes and find support from others who have been in similar situations.
We spoke with several people in recovery to get their thoughts on relapse row memes. Here are some of their responses:
“I find these memes really triggering. It’s hard enough to stay sober without seeing jokes about relapsing all over social media.”
“I think these memes can be helpful if you’re in a good place in your recovery. It’s important to be able to laugh at yourself sometimes.”
“I don’t really care one way or the other. I think people should be able to make whatever memes they want. It’s up to me to decide whether or not to engage with them.”
The Future of Relapse Row Memes
It’s hard to say what the future holds for relapse row memes. Like all meme trends, they’ll likely fade away at some point and be replaced by something else.
However, the conversations sparked by these memes are important. They force us to think about the ways in which we talk about addiction, mental health, and self-improvement. They remind us that recovery is a journey, and setbacks are a natural part of that journey.
Whether you love them or hate them, relapse row memes are a part of social media culture in 2023. How we respond to them is up to us.
