In 2023, it’s hard to believe that it’s been almost a decade since Drake’s “Money in the Grave” was released. But while the song may have faded from the charts, the meme it spawned lives on. In this article, we’ll take a look at the origins of the Drake Money in the Grave meme, explore how it became so popular, and examine why it continues to resonate with people today.

The Origins of the Drake Money in the Grave Meme

For those who may not be familiar, the Drake Money in the Grave meme is a phrase that originated from the chorus of Drake’s hit song of the same name. The song was released in 2019 and quickly became a fan favorite, but it wasn’t until a year later that the meme really took off.

In the summer of 2020, a Twitter user posted a screenshot of Drake’s verse from the song, with the caption “when I die, put my money in the grave.” The tweet quickly went viral, and soon people were using the phrase to jokingly express their desire for financial security in the afterlife.

The Rise of the Drake Money in the Grave Meme

From there, the meme only gained momentum. People began creating their own versions of the tweet, using different images and captions to put their own spin on the joke. The phrase “put my money in the grave” became a catchphrase, used both online and off.

The meme’s popularity was helped along by the fact that it was so relatable. In a world where many of us struggle to make ends meet, the idea of having financial security even in death struck a chord with people. And because the meme was rooted in a popular song, it had a built-in fanbase.
