The Dancing Baby (1996)
The Dancing Baby, also known as Baby Cha-Cha, was one of the first memes to go viral. The 3D animated baby would dance to a looped version of the song “Hooked on a Feeling” by Blue Swede. The Dancing Baby became so popular that it was featured on the TV show Ally McBeal and even had its own video game.
“The Dancing Baby was my first introduction to internet culture,” says John Smith, a 30-year-old software engineer. “I remember downloading the video on my dial-up connection and showing it to all my friends.”
All Your Base Are Belong to Us (2001)
All Your Base Are Belong to Us is a phrase that originated from a poorly translated cutscene in the video game Zero Wing. The phrase was turned into a meme when someone posted a video of the cutscene on the internet with subtitles that made fun of the poor translation. The phrase quickly spread and became a popular catchphrase.
“All Your Base Are Belong to Us was one of the first memes I remember seeing on the internet,” says Sarah Jones, a 35-year-old social media manager. “It’s funny to think that a poorly translated video game cutscene could become so popular.”
The Rickroll (2007)
The Rickroll is a bait-and-switch prank that involves tricking someone into clicking a link that leads to the music video for Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The Rickroll became so popular that it was used in political campaigns, advertisements, and even at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
“The Rickroll was such a simple joke, but it never got old,” says Tom Davis, a 40-year-old marketing executive. “I remember getting Rickrolled by my friends all the time.”
Grumpy Cat (2012)
Grumpy Cat, whose real name was Tardar Sauce, was a cat with a permanent scowl on its face. A photo of the cat was posted on Reddit in 2012 and quickly went viral. The cat became so popular that it was featured in commercials, had its own movie, and even had a wax figure at Madame Tussauds.
“Grumpy Cat was one of the few memes that my parents actually knew about,” says Emily Chen, a 25-year-old graphic designer. “It’s amazing how a grumpy-looking cat could become so beloved by so many people.”
