In 2023, it’s hard to imagine that just a few years ago, the “High Five Meme Borat” was one of the most popular memes on the internet. The meme, which featured a GIF of Sacha Baron Cohen’s character Borat Sagdiyev giving a high five, was everywhere. It was used to celebrate victories, congratulate friends, and just generally spread good vibes.
But like all internet memes, the High Five Meme Borat eventually fell out of favor. So what happened? Let’s take a look at the rise and fall of this beloved meme.
The Birth of the High Five Meme Borat
The High Five Meme Borat first appeared in 2018, after Sacha Baron Cohen’s new TV series “Who Is America?” premiered on Showtime. In the show, Baron Cohen played a variety of characters, including the infamous Borat. One of the most memorable moments from the show was when Borat high-fived a Trump supporter while wearing a MAGA hat.
The moment quickly became a meme, with people using the GIF of Borat high-fiving as a way to celebrate their own victories. It was a funny and lighthearted meme that quickly caught on.
The Height of the High Five Meme Borat’s Popularity
By 2019, the High Five Meme Borat was everywhere. It had been shared on social media thousands of times, and people were using it in all sorts of contexts. Whether you just got a promotion at work, won a game of Fortnite, or successfully cooked a meal for the first time, the High Five Meme Borat was the perfect way to celebrate.
But it wasn’t just everyday people who were using the meme. Celebrities like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Mark Hamill were also getting in on the fun, sharing their own versions of the meme on social media.
The Fall of the High Five Meme Borat
So why did the High Five Meme Borat fall out of favor? There are a few potential reasons.
First, like all memes, the High Five Meme Borat eventually became overused. People were using it in every possible context, and it started to lose its novelty.
Second, some people began to criticize the meme for its connection to Sacha Baron Cohen’s controversial character. While Borat was once seen as a funny and harmless character, some people began to see him as problematic and offensive.
Finally, the COVID-19 pandemic may have played a role in the decline of the High Five Meme Borat. With so many people struggling and facing hardship, the meme may have felt out of touch and insensitive.
