beachgate

In the summer of 2017, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Beachgate, as it came to be known, was a controversy that centered around Christie and his family spending time on a closed beach during the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The internet had a field day with the scandal, and the result was a plethora of hilarious memes that took over social media. Here, we take a look back at the Chris Christie Beachgate memes and their impact on the internet.

The Controversy

The controversy began when photos were released of Christie and his family lounging on a deserted beach during the holiday weekend. The problem was that the beach was closed to the public due to a government shutdown. The images quickly went viral, and people were outraged that Christie was able to enjoy the beach while the rest of the public was denied access.

Christie defended his actions, stating that he had not been on the beach, but rather on the grounds of the governor’s residence, which happened to be adjacent to the closed beach. However, the photos clearly showed him and his family on the sand, and the damage had already been done.

The Memes

As with any controversial situation, the internet responded with a wave of memes. The images ranged from hilarious to downright savage, and they spread like wildfire on social media. Some of the most popular memes featured Christie photoshopped into famous movie scenes, while others simply poked fun at his weight and appearance.

The memes were so popular that they even inspired a game called “Beachgate: The Game,” which allowed players to control Christie as he tried to avoid obstacles on his way to the beach.

The Response

While some people found the memes to be hilarious, others felt that they were disrespectful and went too far. Some argued that it was unfair to mock Christie for his weight and appearance, while others felt that the memes were simply a way to hold a public figure accountable for his actions.

Christie himself responded to the memes in an interview with NJ.com, stating that he thought they were “funny” and that he had “no problem” with people making fun of him. He also stated that he was not bothered by the negative attention, as he had been through worse.

The Legacy

While the Chris Christie Beachgate memes may have faded away over time, they left a lasting legacy on the internet. The controversy and subsequent memes were a testament to the power of social media and the way that it can shape public opinion. They also served as a reminder that public figures are not immune to criticism and mockery, and that they should always be held accountable for their actions.

As for Christie, he has since moved on from politics and has largely stayed out of the public eye. However, his role in the Beachgate controversy will always be remembered as a defining moment in his career.
