On August 5th, 2023, people around the world will be treated to a rare and beautiful spectacle: a total lunar eclipse. As the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, our nearest celestial neighbor will be bathed in a reddish-orange hue, earning it the nickname “Blood Moon.” But while some will be marveling at the cosmic wonder above, others will be taking to the internet to share their own unique takes on the event through the power of memes.

The Rise of the Lunar Eclipse Meme
It’s no secret that memes have become a ubiquitous part of internet culture over the past decade. From the classics like “Bad Luck Brian” and “Success Kid” to more recent hits like “Distracted Boyfriend” and “Woman Yelling at a Cat,” memes have a way of spreading like wildfire across social media platforms and beyond.
So it’s no surprise that lunar eclipses have become fertile ground for meme-making in recent years. From “Blood Moon” references to jokes about werewolves and vampires, there’s no shortage of ways to riff on the natural phenomenon. And with the next total lunar eclipse just a few years away, you can bet that the internet will be awash with lunar eclipse memes once again.
The Best Lunar Eclipse Memes of 2023
While we can’t predict the future (yet), we can make some educated guesses about the types of memes we might see during the 2023 lunar eclipse. Here are a few possibilities:
1. “I Went Outside to See the Eclipse and This Happened”
This classic meme format involves a picture of something mundane, followed by a humorous twist. For example, someone might post a picture of their cat and caption it “I went outside to see the eclipse and this happened.” The implication being that the eclipse was so underwhelming that the cat was more interesting.
2. “When You Realize It’s Just a Big Red Circle”
Another possible meme involves playing up the disappointment factor. Someone might post a picture of a sad-looking person with the caption “When you realize the lunar eclipse is just a big red circle.” This type of meme could be especially popular if the eclipse turns out to be less spectacular than anticipated.
3. “Werewolves Be Like”
No lunar eclipse meme list would be complete without at least one reference to werewolves. This meme might involve a picture of a wolf with a caption like “Werewolves be like…just another day at the office.” Bonus points if the wolf is wearing a tie.

“As a werewolf, I find the constant jokes about our kind during lunar eclipses to be tiresome,” says John Howling III, president of the National Werewolf Association. “But I suppose if people are going to make memes anyway, they might as well be funny.”
“Lunar eclipses are a great opportunity to connect with the public and get people excited about astronomy,” says Dr. Jane Skygazer, an astronomer at the Hayden Planetarium. “And if memes are what it takes to get people interested, then I’m all for it.”
