What started as a harmless trend in 2022 has taken an unexpected turn in 2023. Ratatouille memes, inspired by the beloved Pixar film, have become a popular means of expressing humor and light-heartedness on social media. However, in recent months, some of these memes have taken a turn for the worse, with explicit and sexual content making its way into the mix. The trend has sparked controversy and debate amongst netizens, with some condemning the dirty ratatouille memes and others defending them as harmless fun.
The Rise of the Ratatouille Meme
The ratatouille meme trend began in 2022, when a scene from the film of the same name was turned into a meme format. The scene in question features Remy, the film’s protagonist, controlling the movements of his human partner Linguini by pulling on his hair. The meme format involves replacing Linguini with a different character or object, and adding humorous captions to the image.
Initially, the ratatouille memes were innocent and family-friendly, with captions focusing on relatable or humorous situations. For example, a popular version of the meme shows Remy pulling on the hair of a person holding a tray of food, with the caption “When the waiter walks past your table with someone else’s food”.
The Dark Side of the Ratatouille Meme
However, in 2023, some ratatouille memes have taken a dark and explicit turn, with captions containing sexual innuendos, vulgar language, and explicit imagery. These memes are often shared on platforms such as TikTok and Twitter, where they can reach a wide audience. Some netizens have expressed concern that these memes are inappropriate for children and could be triggering for survivors of sexual assault.
The Controversy
The rise of dirty ratatouille memes has sparked a heated debate amongst netizens. Some argue that the memes are harmless and that people should not be offended by them. Others point out that the sexualization of a children’s film is inappropriate and that the memes could be triggering for some people.
One Twitter user wrote, “I used to love ratatouille memes, but now they just make me uncomfortable. I don’t want to see sexual content when I’m scrolling through my timeline. It’s not funny, it’s just gross.”
Another user responded, “I think people are being too sensitive. It’s just a silly meme. If you don’t like it, you can just scroll past it.”
The Response
Disney, the company behind Ratatouille, has not yet commented on the controversy. However, some fans of the film have expressed their disappointment at the dirty memes.
One Reddit user commented, “I love Ratatouille, and it makes me sad to see people turning it into something dirty. The film is a classic and it deserves better than this.”
Another user responded, “I agree that the dirty memes are a bit much, but at the end of the day, it’s just a silly trend. We shouldn’t take it too seriously.”
The Future of Ratatouille Memes
It remains to be seen whether the trend of dirty ratatouille memes will continue, or if it will die out as quickly as it arose. However, it is clear that the controversy has sparked a conversation about what is and isn’t appropriate to share on social media.
As one Twitter user put it, “We need to be more mindful about what we share online. Just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s okay. We need to be responsible and respectful.”
In conclusion
The rise of dirty ratatouille memes has stirred up controversy and debate amongst netizens in 2023. While some argue that the memes are harmless and a form of harmless fun, others have expressed concern about the sexualization of a children’s film and its potential to trigger survivors of sexual assault. It remains to be seen whether the trend will continue, but it has certainly sparked a conversation about what is and isn’t appropriate to share on social media.
