Back in the early 2000s, a new subculture of men emerged online. They called themselves “pickup artists” or “PUAs” and claimed to have mastered the art of seducing women. They shared their techniques on forums, blogs, and YouTube channels, and soon became a meme. The Pickup Master, a caricature of a slick, confident, and manipulative man, became an iconic figure of the internet.
But over the years, the Pickup Master meme lost its charm. As more and more people realized that the techniques promoted by PUAs were often unethical, manipulative, and even abusive, the meme became associated with toxic masculinity and misogyny. Today, the Pickup Master meme is mostly a relic of the past, a cautionary tale of how a subculture can go wrong.

The Origins of the Pickup Artist Subculture
The Pickup Artist subculture emerged in the mid-2000s, mostly on internet forums such as the now-defunct “Fast Seduction” and “Mystery Method”. The leading figures of the subculture were self-proclaimed gurus such as Neil Strauss, Ross Jeffries, and Erik von Markovik (aka “Mystery”). They claimed to have discovered a set of techniques, called “game”, that could make any man irresistible to women.
These techniques included things like “negging” (giving backhanded compliments to undermine a woman’s confidence), “peacocking” (wearing flashy and attention-grabbing clothes), and “routines” (pre-rehearsed stories and jokes to impress women). PUAs also promoted the idea of “alpha males” and “beta males”, claiming that the former were more successful with women because they were dominant, assertive, and confident.
The Pickup Master Meme
As the Pickup Artist subculture gained popularity, it also became a meme. The Pickup Master, a caricature of a PUA who was always confident, smooth-talking, and successful with women, became a recurring image on internet forums, imageboards, and social media. The Pickup Master was often depicted as wearing flamboyant clothes, using cheesy pickup lines, and employing manipulative tactics to seduce women.
The Pickup Master meme was both a source of amusement and a target of criticism. Some people found the meme funny and entertaining, while others saw it as an embodiment of toxic masculinity and misogyny. The Pickup Master meme also spawned a subculture of its own, with people creating and sharing their own Pickup Master memes and videos.
The Downfall of the Pickup Artist Subculture
As the Pickup Artist subculture grew, so did the criticism against it. Many people, including feminists, psychologists, and former PUAs themselves, denounced the techniques promoted by the subculture as manipulative, unethical, and even abusive. They argued that PUAs treated women as objects to be conquered rather than as human beings with agency and dignity.
The Pickup Artist subculture also faced legal challenges. In 2014, Julien Blanc, a PUA who had gained notoriety for his aggressive and racist tactics, was banned from entering several countries, including the UK, Australia, and Singapore, after a public outcry.
The Legacy of the Pickup Master Meme
Today, the Pickup Master meme is mostly a relic of the past. The Pickup Artist subculture still exists, but it has lost much of its influence and visibility. Many former PUAs have renounced their past and apologized for their behavior, while others have moved on to other pursuits.
However, the legacy of the Pickup Master meme lives on. The meme has become a symbol of how a subculture can go wrong when it promotes toxic masculinity, misogyny, and unethical behavior. The Pickup Master meme is a warning to future generations of internet users to be aware of the dangers of online subcultures and to strive for ethical and respectful behavior.
Responses from People Who Know It
“As a former PUA, I can say that the Pickup Artist subculture was a toxic and damaging environment. I regret the things I did and said back then, and I hope that others can learn from my mistakes.” – John, 34
“The Pickup Master meme was never funny to me. It was always a reminder of the sexism and objectification that women face every day. I’m glad that it’s mostly gone now.” – Sarah, 27
“I think the Pickup Artist subculture was a symptom of a larger cultural problem. We live in a society that values masculinity, dominance, and aggression, and that’s reflected in the way men are taught to interact with women. We need to challenge these toxic norms if we want to create a more equal and respectful world.” – David, 42
