Since the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018, the Duchess of Sussex has been a frequent target of criticism and scrutiny from the British media and public. However, in recent years, there has been a rise in “Queen memes” about Meghan, where Queen Elizabeth II is portrayed as disapproving of her granddaughter-in-law. These memes have sparked controversy and debate online, with some seeing them as harmless jokes while others view them as perpetuating negative stereotypes about Meghan.

What are Queen Memes about Meghan?

Queen memes about Meghan typically feature photos of Queen Elizabeth II with captions or speech bubbles that suggest she disapproves of Meghan or her actions. For example, one popular meme features a photo of the Queen looking stern with the caption, “When Meghan asks if she can wear a tiara to the grocery store.” Another shows the Queen holding a cup of tea with the caption, “When Meghan doesn’t understand the proper way to make a cup of tea.”

These memes often play into negative stereotypes about Meghan, such as portraying her as entitled, disrespectful, or out of touch with British culture. They also imply that the Queen disapproves of Meghan, which reinforces the idea that she is not fully accepted by the royal family.

Why are Queen Memes about Meghan Controversial?

While some people see Queen memes about Meghan as harmless jokes, others view them as perpetuating negative stereotypes and contributing to the bullying and harassment Meghan has faced from the media and public. These memes often make light of serious issues such as racism and sexism, which can be hurtful to those who have experienced discrimination.

Additionally, these memes reinforce the idea that Meghan is not accepted by the royal family and suggest that the Queen disapproves of her. This can further isolate Meghan and contribute to the ongoing tension between her and the rest of the royal family.

Response from People who Know It

Some people who are familiar with the controversy surrounding Queen memes about Meghan have spoken out about their impact. Actress and activist Jameela Jamil tweeted, “These Queen Elizabeth/Meghan Markle memes are not harmless. They are hate speech. They are abusive. They are racist. They are sexist. They are ageist. They are shaming of a woman for being proud of her accomplishments. It’s bullying. Full stop.”

Others, however, have defended the memes as harmless jokes. Comedian Josh Gondelman tweeted, “The Queen Elizabeth/Meghan Markle memes are good because they’re funny and they’re bad because they’re not real.”

What Can We Learn from This Controversy?

The controversy surrounding Queen memes about Meghan highlights the power of memes in shaping public perception and reinforcing negative stereotypes. It also underscores the ongoing issues of racism, sexism, and discrimination that persist in society.

As individuals, we can choose to be more mindful of the impact our words and actions have on others. We can also strive to be more empathetic and understanding towards those who face discrimination and harassment.
