Why May 4th?
May the 4th has become known as Star Wars Day because of the phrase “May the Force be with you.” When said aloud, it sounds like “May the fourth be with you.” The first known usage of this pun was in 1979, when the UK Conservative Party placed an ad in The London Evening News to congratulate Margaret Thatcher on becoming the first female Prime Minister. The ad read, “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.”
The Evolution of Star Wars Memes
Star Wars memes have been around since the early days of the internet, but they have evolved over time. In the early 2000s, memes were mostly still images with captions. The most popular Star Wars meme at the time was “I find your lack of faith disturbing,” which is still used today.
As technology advanced, memes became more complex. Video memes, or “vines,” became popular in the mid-2010s. These short videos allowed fans to create hilarious parodies of their favorite scenes from the movies.
Today, memes are more creative than ever. Fans use Photoshop and other editing software to create elaborate images and videos that take the franchise in new and unexpected directions. One of the most popular memes in recent years has been “Baby Yoda,” a character from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. The cute and cuddly creature quickly became a fan favorite and spawned countless memes.
