In 2017, the world was abuzz with the news that UFC fighter Conor McGregor and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather were set to face off in a historic fight. But for many internet users, it wasn’t the fight itself that captured their attention—it was the hilarious memes that flooded social media in the lead-up to the big event.
From McGregor’s confident strut to Mayweather’s stoic gaze, every aspect of the fighters’ appearances and personalities was ripe for memeification. And as the fight drew closer, the memes only got more creative and absurd.
The Best McGregor vs Mayweather Memes of 2017
One of the earliest and most popular memes to emerge from the McGregor vs Mayweather hype was a simple image macro that featured a photo of McGregor in a suit, accompanied by the text “I’d like to apologize to absolutely nobody.” The quote was a reference to a famous McGregor line from a press conference, and the meme quickly spread across social media.
Another popular meme featured a side-by-side comparison of McGregor’s confident strut and Mayweather’s more reserved walk. The meme was often captioned with some variation of “When you have a job interview vs when you already have the job.”
Some of the more absurd memes included images of McGregor and Mayweather photoshopped into unlikely scenarios, such as fighting each other in a game of chess or racing each other on hoverboards. These memes often featured hilarious captions that poked fun at the fighters’ personalities and the ridiculousness of the fight itself.
The Legacy of the McGregor vs Mayweather Meme
While the McGregor vs Mayweather fight itself may not have lived up to the hype for many viewers, the memes that emerged from the event have endured as a beloved part of internet culture. Even years later, people still share and reference the memes on social media, and they continue to inspire new variations and parodies.
