The Origins of “Ohio Against the World”
One of Ohio’s most enduring memes is “Ohio Against the World,” a phrase that has been emblazoned on t-shirts, hats, and even tattoos. The meme originated in the early 2000s as a response to the perceived snobbery of the East and West Coasts. Ohioans, proud of their state and tired of being overlooked, began using the phrase as a rallying cry. Today, “Ohio Against the World” has become a symbol of Buckeye State pride.
But the meme’s origins go deeper than that. The phrase can be traced back to a 1993 rap song by Cleveland-based group Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. In the song, the group declares: “Ohio against the world, baby.” The phrase resonated with Ohioans, and it wasn’t long before it became a part of the state’s cultural lexicon.
Response from Ohioans:
“I wear my ‘Ohio Against the World’ t-shirt with pride. It’s a reminder that no matter what the rest of the country thinks, we know how great our state is.” – John, Columbus
The Rise of “Ohio Is For Lovers”
In the early 2000s, a band from Dayton called Hawthorne Heights released a song called “Ohio Is For Lovers.” The song became a hit, and its catchy chorus (“So cut my wrists and black my eyes / So I can fall asleep tonight, or die / Because you kill me”) resonated with emo kids across the country.
But it wasn’t until years later that the song became a meme. In 2018, a Twitter user posted a screenshot of the song’s chorus with the caption “Ohio is for lovers: me, an intellectual.” The tweet went viral, and soon people were using the phrase to describe anything they were passionate about.
Response from Ohioans:
“I love how ‘Ohio Is For Lovers’ went from an emo anthem to a meme. It just shows how versatile Ohio’s culture is.” – Rachel, Dayton
The Legacy of Harambe
In 2016, a gorilla named Harambe was shot and killed by zookeepers at the Cincinnati Zoo. The incident sparked a national controversy, with some people arguing that the zoo had acted appropriately and others calling for justice for Harambe.
The incident also gave rise to a meme. Internet users began sharing images and videos of Harambe with humorous captions. The meme became so popular that it was even referenced in the 2016 presidential campaign, with both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump weighing in on the controversy.
Response from Ohioans:
“The Harambe meme was funny at first, but it got old pretty quickly. It’s sad that the poor gorilla’s death was turned into a joke.” – Sarah, Cincinnati
