kicker

Back in 2019, a video of a Chicago Bears kicker named Cody Parkey went viral for all the wrong reasons. During a crucial playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Parkey missed a potential game-winning field goal by hitting the post not once, but twice. The heartbreaking moment was captured on camera, and it didn’t take long for the internet to turn it into a meme.

The Birth of the Meme

Within hours of the game, social media was flooded with memes and jokes about Parkey’s missed field goal. One of the most popular was a simple question: “Are you a Bears kicker?” The meme typically featured a photo of someone failing miserably at a task, accompanied by the rhetorical question.

It didn’t take long for the meme to spread beyond the football world. Soon, people were using it to mock everything from bad cooking to failed relationships. It even found its way into political discourse, with some using it to criticize politicians for their perceived failures.

The Impact of the Meme

The “Are you a Bears kicker?” meme quickly became a cultural touchstone, with people from all walks of life using it to express their frustrations with failure. It was a perfect encapsulation of the internet’s love of schadenfreude, and it quickly spread across social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Some people saw the meme as harmless fun, while others criticized it for making light of Parkey’s very public failure. The kicker himself was understandably not a fan of the meme, telling reporters that he was “annoyed” by it and that it was “a little disrespectful.”

The Legacy of the Meme

Despite the controversy surrounding it, the “Are you a Bears kicker?” meme has continued to thrive in the years since its creation. It has become a shorthand for failure, and it’s not uncommon to see it pop up in comment sections and social media threads whenever someone makes a mistake.

Some people have even turned the meme into merchandise, selling t-shirts and other items featuring the iconic phrase. Others have used it as inspiration for art, creating paintings and illustrations of the meme in action.

The Future of the Meme

As with all memes, it’s impossible to predict how long the “Are you a Bears kicker?” meme will remain popular. It may continue to thrive for years to come, or it may fade away as new memes take its place.

Regardless of its longevity, the “Are you a Bears kicker?” meme will always hold a special place in the internet’s collective memory. It was a moment of shared humor and catharsis, reminding us all that failure is a universal experience.

Comments from People Who Know It

“I think the ‘Are you a Bears kicker?’ meme is a perfect example of how the internet can turn a negative situation into something positive. Sure, it may have been at Parkey’s expense, but it also gave people a way to laugh at their own failures and frustrations.” – @mememaster69

“As a Bears fan, I have mixed feelings about the meme. On one hand, it’s funny and relatable. On the other hand, it’s a painful reminder of a missed opportunity. But ultimately, I think it’s a harmless way to cope with disappointment.” – @bears4life

“I understand why some people might find the meme disrespectful, but I also think it’s important to remember that Parkey is a professional athlete. He’s used to dealing with criticism and scrutiny, and I doubt a few internet memes are going to ruin his day.” – @sportsfanatic
