The Rise of Veganism
Over the past few years, veganism has exploded in popularity. In 2020, there were an estimated 79 million vegans in the world, with the number expected to continue to rise in the coming years. With this rise in popularity has come a growing awareness of the ethical, environmental, and health implications of eating meat. As a result, more and more people are choosing to adopt a plant-based lifestyle.
The Role of Memes in Vegan Activism
As with any social movement, veganism has its fair share of activists. These activists are passionate about promoting the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle and encouraging others to make the switch. However, many activists have found that traditional forms of activism can be confrontational and ineffective. This is where memes come in.
By using humor and satire, vegan activists are able to engage with a wider audience and raise awareness of the issues in a non-threatening way. Memes allow vegans to poke fun at meat eaters without coming across as preachy or judgmental. This has made them a popular tool in the vegan activist toolkit.

“But Bacon Though”
This meme is a classic. It features a picture of a pig with the caption “But bacon though.” The implication, of course, is that while bacon may be delicious, it’s not worth the ethical implications of eating meat.
“Protein? I Get Mine from Plants”
This meme is a response to the common argument that meat is necessary for protein. It features a picture of a vegan athlete with the caption “Protein? I get mine from plants.”
“If You Can’t Watch This, You Shouldn’t Eat It”
This meme is a bit more confrontational. It features a video of animal slaughter with the caption “If you can’t watch this, you shouldn’t eat it.” While it may be a bit graphic for some, it’s a powerful message that drives home the ethical implications of eating meat.
The Response from Meat Eaters
Of course, not everyone finds these memes funny. Meat eaters, in particular, can be offended by the implication that their lifestyle is unethical. Some have even accused vegans of being judgmental and preachy.
