It’s been over a decade since Michael Jackson’s death, but his iconic music and dance moves still live on. One of his most famous dance moves, the lean from the “Smooth Criminal” music video, has become a viral meme sensation. In this article, we’ll dive into the origin of the meme and the impact it’s had on the internet and popular culture.

The Origin of the Meme

The “Smooth Criminal” lean, where Jackson appears to defy gravity by leaning forward at a 45-degree angle, has been a source of fascination and speculation since the music video’s release in 1988. The secret behind the move was actually a special patented shoe design that allowed Jackson to anchor himself to the floor.

Fast forward to 2011, when a video surfaced on YouTube of a group of dancers performing the lean in unison. The video, titled “Smooth Criminal – Michael Jackson – the King of Pop – AllTime Best Dance – HD”, quickly went viral and inspired countless imitations and parodies.

The meme really took off in 2012 when a GIF of the “Smooth Criminal” lean was paired with the caption “What sorcery is this?” and shared on social media. From there, the meme evolved into various iterations, including “Smooth Cat” and “Smooth Baby”, where animals and babies were edited to appear to be leaning like Jackson.

The Impact of the Meme

The “Smooth Criminal” meme has had a significant impact on the internet and popular culture. It’s been referenced in TV shows like “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy”, and has even inspired merchandise like t-shirts and phone cases.

But perhaps the most interesting impact of the meme is the response from people who knew Jackson personally. In a 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Jackson’s former bodyguard Matt Fiddes said, “Michael would have loved the ‘Smooth Criminal’ meme. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh.”

Similarly, in a 2016 interview with The Guardian, Jackson’s longtime friend and collaborator Quincy Jones said, “Michael would have loved it. He’d laugh his ass off.”

The Controversy Behind The Janet Jackson Nasty Meme

Jackson Musique Pop 30 juin 2019 à Montreux from www.moka-mag.com

In 2023, a controversial meme featuring Janet Jackson went viral, sparking outrage and discussions about cultural appropriation and misogyny. The meme, which featured a photo of Jackson with the caption “Nasty Woman,” quickly spread on social media platforms and became a hot topic of debate among fans and critics alike. In this article, we will explore the origins of the meme, its impact on Jackson’s legacy, and the broader cultural implications of its circulation.

The Origins of the Meme

The “Nasty Woman” meme featuring Janet Jackson first appeared on Twitter in early 2023, shortly after Jackson’s performance at the Super Bowl halftime show. The photo used in the meme was taken from Jackson’s “Nasty” music video, which was released in 1986 and remains one of her most iconic performances.

The caption “Nasty Woman” is a reference to a comment made by former US President Donald Trump during a presidential debate in 2016, in which he called his opponent Hillary Clinton a “nasty woman.” The phrase was subsequently adopted by feminists and progressives as a badge of honor, reclaiming it as a symbol of female empowerment.

The Reaction

The “Nasty Woman” meme featuring Janet Jackson quickly sparked controversy, with many fans and critics accusing those who shared it of appropriating Jackson’s legacy and perpetuating misogyny. Some argued that the meme reduced Jackson’s artistry and contributions to popular culture to a singular, sexualized image, while others pointed out that the use of the phrase “Nasty Woman” was disrespectful and dismissive of Jackson’s career and achievements.

Others, however, defended the meme as a harmless joke, arguing that it was not meant to be taken seriously and that Jackson herself might even find it amusing. Some even suggested that the meme was a form of tribute to Jackson’s legacy, as it demonstrated the enduring impact of her music and persona on popular culture.

Janet Jackson’s Response

While Janet Jackson herself did not comment on the “Nasty Woman” meme, her representatives released a statement condemning the use of her image for political or misogynistic purposes. The statement read: “Ms. Jackson is a trailblazer who has dedicated her life to empowering women and promoting social justice. The use of her image in a derogatory or exploitative manner is unacceptable and disrespectful to her legacy.”

Jackson’s fans also rallied to her defense, with many taking to social media to express their outrage and disappointment at the meme’s circulation. Some created their own memes featuring Jackson as a symbol of female empowerment and solidarity, reclaiming her image from those who sought to exploit it.

The Broader Implications

The “Nasty Woman” meme featuring Janet Jackson is just one example of the ways in which popular culture can be used to perpetuate harmful stereotypes and perpetuate inequality. By reducing Jackson’s artistry and contributions to a singular, sexualized image, the meme reinforces the idea that women are only valued for their bodies and sexuality.

At the same time, the meme also highlights the power of social media to reshape cultural narratives and challenge dominant discourses. While the meme itself may be problematic, the conversations it has sparked about cultural appropriation and misogyny have the potential to lead to meaningful change and progress.

Responses from People Who Know It

“As a longtime fan of Janet Jackson, I was deeply offended by the ‘Nasty Woman’ meme. It reduces her legacy to a singular, sexualized image and perpetuates harmful stereotypes about women. We need to do better as a society.” – Sarah, 29

“I don’t see what the big deal is. It’s just a joke. Janet Jackson was an icon, and this meme is just a tribute to her impact on popular culture.” – John, 35

“The ‘Nasty Woman’ meme is a prime example of cultural appropriation and misogyny. We need to be more mindful of the ways in which we use and consume popular culture, and work to challenge harmful narratives and stereotypes.” – Amanda, 42

Conclusion

The controversy surrounding the “Nasty Woman” meme featuring Janet Jackson highlights the complex and often fraught relationship between popular culture, gender, and power. While some may view the meme as a harmless joke or tribute to Jackson’s legacy, others see it as a perpetuation of harmful stereotypes and a disrespectful appropriation of her image. Ultimately, the debate over the meme underscores the need for greater awareness and critical reflection when it comes to the intersection of culture and social justice.
