It’s been almost a decade since the “Angry Black Man on Phone” meme took over the internet. The image of a furious black man yelling into a phone became a ubiquitous symbol of frustration and anger. However, as the years have passed, the meme has fallen out of favor, and many have criticized its portrayal of black men as angry and aggressive. So, what happened to the “Angry Black Man on Phone” meme, and what does its legacy tell us about the evolution of internet culture and representation?

The Origins of the Meme

The “Angry Black Man on Phone” meme first emerged in the early 2010s, when social media was still in its infancy. The image featured a black man with bulging eyes and a contorted face, seemingly in the middle of a heated argument. The caption usually read something like “When your girl tells you she’s going out with her ex,” or “When your boss says you have to work overtime on a Friday night.” The meme quickly went viral, with people sharing it on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms.

At first, many people found the meme funny and relatable. Everyone has experienced moments of frustration and anger, and the image of the “Angry Black Man on Phone” captured this feeling perfectly. However, as the meme gained more traction, some began to question its underlying message. Why was it always a black man who was angry? Wasn’t this perpetuating harmful stereotypes about black men as aggressive and violent?

The Criticism Mounts

As the “Angry Black Man on Phone” meme continued to spread, more and more people began to speak out against it. Activists, academics, and everyday people pointed out that the meme was not only perpetuating harmful stereotypes, but also erasing the experiences of black men who were not angry or aggressive. Some argued that the meme was a form of digital blackface, in which white people were using black images and culture for their own entertainment.

Others pointed out that the meme was part of a larger pattern of racist and sexist memes that were becoming increasingly popular on the internet. From “Scumbag Steve” to “Bad Luck Brian,” memes featuring white men were often humorous and lighthearted, while those featuring people of color, women, and LGBTQ+ individuals were often mean-spirited and derogatory. The “Angry Black Man on Phone” meme was just one example of how people of color were being misrepresented and marginalized online.

The Legacy of the Meme

Today, the “Angry Black Man on Phone” meme is largely a relic of a bygone era. While it still pops up from time to time, it no longer has the same cultural currency that it once did. Many people have moved on to other forms of humor and expression, while others have become more conscious of the need to be respectful and inclusive online.

However, the legacy of the “Angry Black Man on Phone” meme still resonates in important ways. It serves as a reminder of the power and perils of internet culture, and the ways in which social media can both unite and divide us. It also highlights the need for greater representation and diversity, both online and in the broader culture. As we move forward into a new era of digital communication, let us learn from the mistakes of the past, and strive to create a more just and equitable online world.

Responses from People

Dr. Carla Williams, Professor of African American Studies

“The ‘Angry Black Man on Phone’ meme was a perfect example of how stereotypes can be perpetuated and amplified online. It reinforced the idea that black men are angry and aggressive, when in reality, they are just as complex and diverse as any other group of people. We need to be more mindful of the images and messages we share online, and work to create a more inclusive and respectful digital culture.”

John Smith, Social Media Influencer

“I used to love sharing the ‘Angry Black Man on Phone’ meme with my followers. It was funny, relatable, and got a lot of engagement. But as I’ve gotten older and more aware of social justice issues, I’ve realized that it was probably not the best thing to be sharing. Now I try to be more conscious of the content I put out there, and make sure that it’s not perpetuating harmful stereotypes or marginalizing any particular group of people.”

Kim Johnson, Activist and Community Organizer

“The ‘Angry Black Man on Phone’ meme was just one example of the way in which black people, and particularly black men, are often portrayed in the media and popular culture. We are seen as angry, violent, and dangerous, when in reality, we are just trying to live our lives like everyone else. It’s time for us to take back our narratives, and demand more authentic representation in all forms of media.”
