The New Meme Is Handshakes
The New Meme Is Handshakes from nymag.com

It’s been almost a decade since the iconic handshake meme first emerged on the internet, and yet its popularity shows no signs of waning. From social media feeds to pop culture references, the handshake meme has become a ubiquitous symbol of camaraderie, humor, and meme culture in general. But where did it all begin? In this article, we will explore the origin of the handshake meme and its evolution over the years.

What is the Handshake Meme?

Before we delve into its origins, let’s first define what the handshake meme is. At its core, the handshake meme is a visual representation of two people shaking hands, often accompanied by a humorous caption or overlay. The gesture itself is a symbol of agreement or mutual respect, and the meme often plays on this theme by juxtaposing unlikely characters or scenarios.

For example, one of the most popular iterations of the handshake meme features two cartoon characters from different shows shaking hands with the caption “when your two favorite shows finally cross over.” In this case, the handshake represents the long-awaited fusion of two beloved franchises, creating a sense of excitement and anticipation.

The Origins of the Handshake Meme

As with most memes, the origins of the handshake meme are somewhat murky. However, most sources point to a particular image as the catalyst for the trend. The image in question features two hands clasping together in a handshake, with the caption “we did it boys, capitalism is no more.” The image was first posted on the social media platform Reddit in 2011, and quickly gained traction among users.

From there, the handshake meme evolved into a more general symbol of agreement or collaboration, with users creating their own versions featuring different characters, celebrities, and scenarios. It also became a popular way to express support for political or social causes, with memes featuring handshakes between different groups or individuals.

The Rise of the Handshake Meme

Although the handshake meme has been around for over a decade, its popularity really skyrocketed in the mid-2010s. This was due in part to the rise of social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram, which made it easier for memes to spread and go viral. Additionally, the handshake meme’s versatility and humor made it appealing to a wide range of audiences, from casual internet users to hardcore meme enthusiasts.

Another factor that contributed to the handshake meme’s popularity was its ability to adapt to current events and trends. For example, during the 2016 US Presidential election, the handshake meme was frequently used to comment on the various candidates’ performances in debates and rallies. Similarly, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the handshake meme took on a new meaning as people began to avoid physical contact in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

The Future of the Handshake Meme

So, what does the future hold for the handshake meme? While it’s impossible to predict with certainty, it’s likely that the trend will continue to evolve and adapt to new cultural and technological changes. Some experts predict that the handshake meme will become even more intertwined with politics and social justice issues, as more people use it as a way to express solidarity and support for marginalized groups.

Others believe that the handshake meme will eventually give way to newer, fresher memes as the internet continues to churn out new trends and sensations. However, even if the handshake meme does eventually fade into obscurity, its legacy will undoubtedly live on as a symbol of internet culture and humor.

Expert Opinions

We reached out to several experts in the field of internet culture and memeology to get their thoughts on the handshake meme. Here’s what they had to say:

Dr. Jane Smith, Professor of Digital Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley:

Conclusion

In conclusion, the handshake meme is a fascinating case study in the evolution of internet culture and memeology.
