For those who grew up watching the classic animated sitcom The Flintstones, the character known as The Great Gazoo needs no introduction. This tiny, green-skinned alien was introduced in the show’s final season as a recurring character, tasked with observing and assisting series regulars Fred and Barney. In recent years, however, The Great Gazoo has taken on a new life as a popular internet meme. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the history of The Great Gazoo, how it became a meme, and what makes it so enduringly popular.

The History of The Great Gazoo

The Great Gazoo made his first appearance on The Flintstones in 1965, during the show’s final season. Voiced by actor Harvey Korman, The Great Gazoo is a member of an advanced alien race who has been exiled to Earth as punishment for his mischievous ways. He is tasked with observing Fred and Barney, and occasionally intervening to help them out of a jam. Despite his small stature, The Great Gazoo possesses incredible powers, including the ability to teleport and turn invisible.

Although The Great Gazoo only appeared in a handful of episodes, he quickly became a fan favorite. His quirky personality and oddball antics helped to inject new life into the show, which was beginning to show its age after six seasons on the air.

The Great Gazoo as a Meme

Fast forward to the 21st century, and The Great Gazoo has taken on a new life as a popular internet meme. While the character has always had a devoted fanbase, it wasn’t until the rise of social media that The Great Gazoo truly went viral.

One of the earliest examples of The Great Gazoo as a meme was the “Great Gazoo Rules” image macro, which featured a screenshot of the character with the caption “Great Gazoo Rules!” This image became popular on message boards and forums, where users would post it as a way of expressing their support for a particular opinion or viewpoint.

Since then, The Great Gazoo has appeared in countless memes, ranging from image macros to reaction gifs to remixes of classic Flintstones clips. The character’s popularity shows no signs of slowing down, with new Great Gazoo memes appearing on a regular basis.

What Makes The Great Gazoo a Great Meme?

So why has The Great Gazoo become such a beloved meme? For starters, the character’s unique appearance and quirky personality make him an ideal subject for humorous content. His small size and oddball mannerisms lend themselves well to reaction gifs and image macros, while his extraterrestrial origins make him an ideal candidate for remixing classic Flintstones clips.

But beyond his inherent memability, The Great Gazoo has also struck a chord with internet users for a more fundamental reason: he represents a simpler, more innocent time.
