It’s been nearly a decade since the first Filthy Frank green screen video hit the internet, and yet, the meme culture surrounding these videos shows no signs of slowing down. For those unfamiliar with the infamous Filthy Frank character, he was an internet personality known for his crude humor, absurdist sketches, and surreal commentary on pop culture. But it was his use of green screen technology that really made him stand out from the crowd.
For the uninitiated, green screen technology allows filmmakers to superimpose any background they want behind their subjects, creating the illusion that they’re anywhere in the world. In Filthy Frank’s case, this meant he could transport himself to any location he wanted, from outer space to the depths of hell. But it wasn’t just the technology that made these videos so popular; it was the absurdity of the situations he put himself in, and the ridiculous characters he played.

The Birth of a Meme
The first Filthy Frank green screen video was uploaded in 2011, and it quickly gained a cult following on sites like 4chan and Reddit. In the video, Frank (played by Joji, who would later go on to become a successful musician under the name “Pink Guy”) dances in front of a green screen while wearing a full-body green suit, making it appear as though he’s just a floating head and hands. It’s a bizarre sight, but it was the perfect setup for the countless memes that would follow.
One of the earliest and most popular Filthy Frank green screen memes was the “It’s time to stop” video. In it, Frank appears on screen holding up a sign that reads “It’s time to stop,” before launching into a hilarious rant about all the things that need to stop, from bad fashion to cringey internet trends. The video quickly went viral, and spawned countless remixes and parodies.
The Evolution of the Meme
Over the years, Filthy Frank green screen memes have evolved and taken on a life of their own. One of the most popular sub-genres of these memes is the “Green Screen Man” meme, which features a character wearing a green suit (similar to the one Frank wore in his videos) and interacting with various backgrounds and situations. These videos are often absurd and nonsensical, but they’re also incredibly creative and funny.
Another popular sub-genre of Filthy Frank green screen memes is the “Green Screen Challenge” meme. In these videos, creators challenge each other to make the most absurd and ridiculous green screen video they can think of, often incorporating bizarre sound effects and over-the-top editing. These challenges have become a mainstay of the meme community, and have spawned countless videos and remixes.
