Memes have become a ubiquitous part of internet culture in the past decade. From Grumpy Cat to the Drake Hotline Bling dance, memes have given us endless laughs, relatable content, and a way to connect with people from all over the world. In this article, we will explore the world of memes and discuss some of the most popular and iconic memes of all time.
What is a Meme?
Before we dive into the world of memes, let’s define what a meme is. According to Merriam-Webster, a meme is “an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture.” In the context of the internet, a meme is typically an image or video with a humorous caption that is shared and spread across social media.
Origins of Memes
Memes have been around much longer than the internet. The word “meme” was coined by biologist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book, The Selfish Gene. Dawkins used the term to describe how cultural ideas and practices spread throughout society. However, the modern-day definition of a meme is more closely tied to the internet and social media.
The Most Popular Memes of All Time
There have been countless memes that have gone viral over the years, but some have stood the test of time and remain popular to this day. Here are some of the most iconic memes of all time:
Grumpy Cat
Grumpy Cat was a viral sensation in 2012 and quickly became an internet icon. The cat, whose real name was Tardar Sauce, had a permanent scowl on her face due to a genetic condition. Her grumpy expression was the perfect fodder for memes and she quickly became one of the most recognizable memes of all time.
Pepe the Frog
Pepe the Frog was created by artist Matt Furie in 2005 and became a popular meme in 2015. However, the meme was co-opted by the alt-right and white supremacists, leading to Furie denouncing the meme and suing those who used it for hate speech.
Distracted Boyfriend
The Distracted Boyfriend meme features a man turning away from his girlfriend to look at another woman. The meme is often used to depict a situation where someone is distracted by something else, whether it be a new hobby or a new love interest.
The Future of Memes
As the internet and social media continue to evolve, so too will the world of memes. While it’s impossible to predict what the next viral meme will be, it’s safe to say that memes will continue to be a part of internet culture for years to come.
