When Football Meets Pop Culture
One of the most entertaining aspects of football memes is how they merge the world of sport with that of pop culture. In 2021, we’ve seen many examples of this trend. For instance, after Tottenham Hotspur’s goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made a terrible mistake in a game against Liverpool, fans flooded social media with memes of the “This is Fine” dog from the comic strip Gunshow, replacing the dog with Lloris and the burning house with the goalpost.
“I couldn’t stop laughing at that one,” says Joe, a football fan from London. “It was so spot-on, and it perfectly captured the feeling of watching your team lose in a ridiculous way.”
When Footballers Get Creative
Footballers are known for their skills on the pitch, but some of them also have a talent for making us laugh off the pitch. In 2021, we’ve seen several instances of footballers getting creative with their celebrations or their social media posts. One of the most memorable examples is when Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard scored a goal against West Ham and celebrated by doing the “JLingz Challenge,” a dance move he created and popularized on social media.
“That was hilarious,” says Sarah, a football fan from Manchester. “I love it when players show their personality and have fun. It makes the game more enjoyable to watch.”
When Football Goes Wrong
Let’s face it, as much as we love football, sometimes things go wrong on the pitch, and that’s when the memes come in handy. In 2021, we’ve seen plenty of examples of football fails that turned into internet gold. For instance, when Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema missed an open goal in a game against Chelsea, fans didn’t hesitate to make fun of him on social media, comparing his miss to some of the most infamous football blunders in history.
“I felt bad for Benzema, but at the same time, I couldn’t help but laugh at the memes,” says Tom, a football fan from Madrid. “It’s a way of coping with disappointment, I guess.”
When Football Unites Us
Despite the rivalries and the tensions that football can create, memes have a way of bringing people together and reminding us that we’re all part of the same football community. In 2021, we’ve seen many examples of memes that transcended club allegiances and national borders, and that made us laugh as one. For instance, when Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United after 12 years, fans from all over the world celebrated with memes that showcased his iconic poses and expressions.
“It was amazing to see how much love and admiration there was for Ronaldo,” says Maria, a football fan from Lisbon. “Even if you’re not a United fan, you can appreciate his talent and his charisma. That’s what memes are all about, I think.”

Football memes are not just a form of entertainment, they’re also a reflection of the culture and the emotions that surround the beautiful game.
