The Origins of the Meme
The Brady Super Bowl meme first emerged in 2018, following the New England Patriots’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII. In the photo, Brady is seen sitting on the field, looking defeated and alone. The image quickly went viral, with internet users adding their own humorous captions to the photo.
One of the earliest iterations of the meme featured the caption “When you realize you’re married to Gisele but you still lost the Super Bowl.” This particular version of the meme played off of Brady’s marriage to supermodel Gisele Bundchen, and was widely shared on social media.
The Impact on Popular Culture
Since its inception, the Brady Super Bowl meme has had a significant impact on popular culture. The meme has been referenced in TV shows, movies, and even political campaigns. In 2020, presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg used the meme in a campaign ad, showing a photo of Brady with the caption “When you’re 37 and still living in your parents’ basement.”
The meme has also spawned countless merchandise items, including t-shirts, coffee mugs, and phone cases. Even professional athletes have gotten in on the fun, with some incorporating the meme into their own social media posts.
Responses from Fans and Critics
Despite its widespread popularity, the Brady Super Bowl meme has received its fair share of criticism. Some argue that the meme is disrespectful to Brady and his accomplishments, while others see it as a harmless joke.
One respondent to a Twitter poll about the meme remarked, “As a Patriots fan, I hate it. But as a meme enthusiast, I have to admit it’s pretty funny.” Another respondent added, “I’m not a football fan, but even I know this meme. It’s iconic.”
Tom Brady’s Response
Tom Brady himself has even weighed in on the meme. In a 2019 interview with ESPN, the quarterback acknowledged the meme’s popularity, but also expressed his frustration with it.
“I think it’s a pretty good meme,” Brady said. “It makes for a good joke, but being a part of the conversation where people are talking about you negatively, that’s not fun.”
