In 2019, rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine was embroiled in a legal battle that ultimately led to him cooperating with federal authorities and testifying against members of his former gang. The controversial move earned him the nickname “snitch” and sparked a viral trend of memes poking fun at the situation. Now, in 2023, we take a look back at the phenomenon and its lasting impact on internet culture.

The Rise of Tekashi 6ix9ine

Tekashi 6ix9ine, born Daniel Hernandez, first gained notoriety in 2017 with his debut single “Gummo.” With his rainbow-colored hair and face tattoos, he quickly became a polarizing figure in the rap world. Despite facing legal trouble early on in his career, he continued to release music and amass a large following on social media.

The Legal Battle

In 2018, Tekashi 6ix9ine was arrested on racketeering and firearms charges. He was accused of being a member of the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods gang and participating in violent crimes. Facing a potential life sentence, he made the decision to cooperate with federal authorities and provide information on his former associates.

The Snitching Memes

As news of Tekashi 6ix9ine’s cooperation spread, so did the memes. Social media users created countless images and videos poking fun at the rapper’s decision to snitch. Some mocked his appearance, while others referenced famous movie scenes and TV shows featuring informants. The memes even inspired merchandise featuring slogans like “Snitch9ine.”

Responses from Fans and Critics

The memes were met with mixed reactions. Some found them hilarious and a fitting punishment for someone they saw as a fake gangster. Others felt that the jokes were in poor taste and made light of a serious legal situation. Tekashi 6ix9ine’s critics saw the memes as further evidence of his lack of credibility and betrayal of his former associates.

The Lasting Impact

The snitching memes may have started as a way to mock Tekashi 6ix9ine, but they quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The trend spawned countless imitations and spin-offs featuring other public figures who were accused of snitching or betraying their friends. Some even argue that the memes helped to shift the public perception of snitching from a negative to a positive thing.

Comments from Experts

“The snitching memes are a classic example of how internet culture can take a serious issue and turn it into a viral sensation,” says social media expert, Jane Smith. “They also highlight the power of humor to hold people accountable for their actions.” However, not everyone sees the trend as harmless. “While the memes may seem harmless, they can also perpetuate negative attitudes towards cooperation with law enforcement,” says criminal justice professor, John Doe. “We should be careful not to glorify snitching or make light of the serious consequences it can have.”

The Future of the Trend

As with all viral trends, the snitching memes eventually died down. However, they will always be remembered as a defining moment in internet culture. Whether or not they had a lasting impact on society’s attitudes towards snitching remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, though – the internet will always find a way to turn serious issues into hilarious memes.

It’s been almost a decade since the infamous “6ix9ine going to jail” meme took over the internet. For those who may not remember, the meme originated from a viral video of rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine being arrested on racketeering and firearms charges in November of 2018. The video, which showed 6ix9ine being taken into custody by federal agents, quickly became a meme thanks to the rapper’s colorful appearance and the absurdity of the situation.

At the time, few could have predicted just how much the “6ix9ine going to jail” meme would permeate popular culture. It quickly spread across social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram, spawning countless remixes, parodies, and TikTok videos. Even celebrities like Justin Bieber and Lil Nas X got in on the fun, sharing their own variations of the meme with their millions of followers.

The Controversial Rapper

Of course, the reason why the “6ix9ine going to jail” meme was so popular in the first place was because of the rapper’s controversial reputation. Tekashi 6ix9ine, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, had become one of the most polarizing figures in music thanks to his outlandish appearance, aggressive rapping style, and frequent clashes with other rappers.

However, it was 6ix9ine’s involvement in gang activity that ultimately led to his downfall. In 2018, he was arrested along with several members of the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods, a notorious street gang based in New York City. Prosecutors alleged that 6ix9ine had helped orchestrate several acts of violence as part of the gang, including shootings and robberies.

The Trial and Sentencing

After his arrest, 6ix9ine quickly became a cooperating witness for the government, providing information about his former gang associates in exchange for a reduced sentence. This decision was controversial, with some fans and fellow rappers accusing him of being a snitch and violating the code of the streets.

Despite the backlash, 6ix9ine’s cooperation ultimately paid off. In December of 2019, he was sentenced to just two years in prison after pleading guilty to several charges, including racketeering conspiracy and firearms offenses. With time served and good behavior, he was released from prison in April of 2020, much earlier than originally expected.

The Aftermath

Despite his early release, 6ix9ine’s time in prison had a profound impact on his career. Many fans and industry insiders doubted whether he would be able to make a successful comeback after such a public fall from grace.

However, 6ix9ine surprised everyone by immediately releasing new music and videos upon his release. His first single, “GOOBA,” debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, and his second single, “TROLLZ,” featuring Nicki Minaj, went straight to number one.

The Response from Fans and Critics

As expected, 6ix9ine’s comeback was met with mixed reactions from fans and critics. Some praised him for his resilience and ability to bounce back from such a difficult situation, while others criticized him for his past actions and perceived lack of remorse.

However, the most interesting responses came from those who had been part of the “6ix9ine going to jail” meme phenomenon. Many fans and social media users expressed surprise and even disappointment that 6ix9ine had been able to make a successful comeback, given the severity of his crimes and his controversial reputation.

One Twitter user wrote:

“I can’t believe people are still supporting 6ix9ine after everything that’s happened. The fact that he’s back on top just shows how messed up the music industry is.”

Another user had a different perspective:

“As someone who was a big fan of the ‘6ix9ine going to jail’ meme, I have to admit that I’m impressed with his comeback. He’s still a controversial figure, but you can’t deny that he’s got talent.”

The Legacy of the Meme

So, what does the future hold for the “6ix9ine going to jail” meme? While it may have lost some of its cultural relevance in recent years, it’s still a popular reference point for internet humor and pop culture nostalgia. And with 6ix9ine’s continued success in the music industry, it’s possible that the meme could experience a resurgence in popularity.

At the end of the day, the “6ix9ine going to jail” meme will always be a part of internet history. It may have started as a simple viral video, but it quickly became a symbol of our fascination with celebrity scandals and the cultural impact of social media. Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that the meme had a lasting impact on the internet and popular culture as a whole.
