The Vancouver Canucks had quite the rollercoaster of a season in 2022-23, and while their on-ice performance may have left some fans frustrated, the team certainly provided plenty of material for internet memes. From epic wins to crushing losses, there was no shortage of moments that Canucks fans will want to immortalize in meme form. Let’s take a look back at some of the best Vancouver Canucks memes of the season!
The “Hughes and Petey Show” Takes Over
One of the most exciting things about the Canucks’ season was the emergence of young stars Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson as the team’s new dynamic duo. Fans quickly took to calling them the “Hughes and Petey Show,” and there were plenty of memes poking fun at the pair’s seemingly telepathic connection on the ice. One popular meme featured a photoshopped image of the two players as characters from the TV show “Drake and Josh,” with the caption “Hughes and Petey, it’s gonna be great!”
“I love the Hughes and Petey memes,” says Canucks fan and meme enthusiast Sarah Johnson. “They’re just so funny and relatable. I think a lot of fans feel like they have a special connection with those two players, and the memes really capture that.”
The Infamous “Goalie Situation”
One of the biggest storylines of the Canucks’ season was their ongoing struggle to find a reliable starting goalie. Jacob Markstrom had left in free agency the previous summer, and the team had been relying on a combination of Thatcher Demko and Braden Holtby to fill the void. Unfortunately, neither goalie was able to consistently deliver the kind of performance that the team needed to win.
The goalie situation became a frequent target of meme-makers, with many poking fun at the team’s inability to find a solution. One popular meme featured a photoshopped image of Demko and Holtby on the cover of a “Where’s Waldo?” book, with the caption “Can you find the real starting goalie?”
“It was definitely frustrating to watch the team struggle with the goalie situation,” says Canucks fan and meme creator Kyle Lee. “But at the same time, it was kind of funny to see all the different ways that people were making fun of it. I think it helped us all cope with the disappointment.”
The “Trade Deadline Frenzy”
As the NHL’s trade deadline approached, Canucks fans were bracing themselves for a flurry of activity. The team was rumored to be considering a number of different trades, and there was a lot of speculation about which players might be on the move.
When the deadline finally arrived, there were plenty of surprises. The Canucks made a number of trades, including sending veteran defenseman Alex Edler to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a draft pick. The moves were the subject of many memes, with some fans expressing excitement about the team’s new acquisitions and others lamenting the loss of favorite players.
“The trade deadline was definitely a wild ride,” says Canucks fan and meme connoisseur Jason Chen. “It was interesting to see all the different reactions from fans, and I think the memes really captured that. There were some really creative ones that made me laugh out loud.”
The “Playoff Push”
As the regular season drew to a close, the Canucks found themselves in a tight race for a playoff spot. The team had been playing well down the stretch, and fans were starting to get excited about the possibility of a postseason run.
Unfortunately, the Canucks ultimately fell just short of their goal, finishing just outside the playoff picture. The disappointment was palpable, but it also provided plenty of material for memes. One popular meme featured a photo of a sad-looking Elias Pettersson, with the caption “When you realize you’re not making the playoffs.”
“The playoff push was definitely a rollercoaster of emotions,” says Canucks fan and meme enthusiast Emily Tan. “But the memes were a great way to cope with the disappointment. They helped us all laugh and remember that there’s always next year.”
The Legacy of Vancouver Canucks Memes
Although the 2022-23 NHL season is now in the rearview mirror, the legacy of Vancouver Canucks memes lives on. Fans continue to create and share hilarious images and videos on social media, and the memes have become a beloved part of the team’s culture.
“I think the memes really speak to how passionate Canucks fans are,” says Sarah Johnson. “We love our team, even when they’re not playing well, and the memes are a way for us to show that. They’re a way for us to connect with each other and have some fun.”
So, whether you’re a die-hard Canucks fan or just someone who enjoys a good laugh, there’s no denying the power of Vancouver Canucks memes. Here’s hoping that the team continues to provide plenty of material for meme-makers in the years to come!
