The video was shared thousands of times, and people started making their own versions of it with different music and captions.

What is the Tumbleweave Meme?

The Tumbleweave Meme is a video or image that shows a weave getting caught in a tumbleweed. The video usually starts with a woman posing or dancing, and then a tumbleweed comes out of nowhere and snatches the weave off her head. It’s usually accompanied by a funny caption or music.

The Impact of the Tumbleweave Meme

The Tumbleweave Meme had a huge impact on social media. It was shared on every platform, and people couldn’t get enough of it. It was also featured on several news outlets and talk shows, which helped it gain even more popularity.

Many people found the Tumbleweave Meme to be hilarious and relatable. Women who wear weaves could relate to the fear of losing their hair in public, and everyone could appreciate the absurdity of a tumbleweed stealing a weave.

The Backlash

As with any internet trend, there was also a backlash to the Tumbleweave Meme. Some people found it offensive or insensitive to women who wear weaves. They argued that it made fun of a hairstyle that is often mocked and stigmatized.

Others criticized the Tumbleweave Meme for being unoriginal and overdone. They argued that it was just another example of the internet’s obsession with viral trends and that it would soon be forgotten.

Responses from People Who Know It

On the other hand, Rachel, a 32-year-old from New York City, says, “I think the Tumbleweave Meme is offensive. It’s making fun of a hairstyle that is often stigmatized and associated with black women. It’s not funny.”

Some people are still making Tumbleweave videos and images, but they are no longer as popular as they were in 2023.

Why "Bad Weave Memes" Need To Stop

May 1, 2023 by Simon

Wtf 4head weave Funny black memes, Hair fails, Bad hair from www.pinterest.com

It’s 2023 and we’re still dealing with the harmful trend of “bad weave memes.” These memes, which often feature photos of Black women with poorly done weaves, have been circulating on social media for years. While some may see them as harmless jokes, the reality is that they perpetuate harmful stereotypes and contribute to the overall devaluation of Black women’s beauty.

What Are “Bad Weave Memes”?

For those who may not be familiar with the term, “bad weave memes” are online posts that feature photos of Black women with what the poster deems to be a poorly done weave. These memes often include captions or text that poke fun at the woman’s appearance, making her the butt of the joke.

Some of these memes are created by individuals, while others are shared from larger meme accounts or social media pages. Regardless of where they come from, their impact is the same: they perpetuate harmful stereotypes about Black women and their hair.

The Harmful Impact of “Bad Weave Memes”

At their core, “bad weave memes” are rooted in racism and misogyny. They play into the idea that Black women’s natural hair is somehow “less than” or not as beautiful as other hair types. By making fun of Black women for their weaves, these memes perpetuate the notion that Black women need to alter their appearance in order to be considered attractive or desirable.

Additionally, these memes often feature women who are already marginalized in other ways. For example, they may be plus-sized, dark-skinned, or queer. By mocking these women for their appearance, “bad weave memes” contribute to the overall devaluation of these groups and reinforce harmful stereotypes.

Responses from Those Who Know It

I spoke with several Black women who have been targeted by “bad weave memes” and asked them how it makes them feel. Here are some of their responses:

“It’s hurtful and dehumanizing.”

“When I see these memes, it makes me feel like my worth as a person is tied to my appearance. It’s like people are saying that because my weave looks bad, I’m not worth respecting or treating with basic human decency.”

“It’s frustrating because we’re damned if we do, damned if we don’t.”

“If we wear our natural hair, we’re told it’s ‘unprofessional’ or ‘unkempt.’ If we wear a weave, we’re told it looks bad. It’s like we can’t win. These memes just reinforce that.”

“It’s exhausting to constantly have to defend ourselves.”

“We’re constantly having to explain our hair choices to people who don’t understand. It’s exhausting. And then to have these memes circulating, it’s like we’re being gaslit. We know our hair looks good, but we’re being told it doesn’t.”

What Can We Do About It?

So, what can we do to stop the spread of “bad weave memes”? Here are a few suggestions:

Call it out when you see it.

If you come across a “bad weave meme,” don’t just scroll past it. Call it out for what it is: a harmful and dehumanizing joke at the expense of Black women. Educate others on why these memes are harmful and encourage them to do the same.

Support Black women-owned beauty businesses.

One way to combat the notion that Black women’s natural hair is somehow “less than” is by supporting Black women-owned beauty businesses. These businesses often specialize in natural hair care and can help to break down harmful stereotypes about Black hair.

Amplify Black women’s voices.

Finally, one of the best things you can do to combat harmful memes like these is to amplify Black women’s voices. Listen to what they have to say about their hair and their experiences, and share their stories with others. By uplifting Black women, we can help to counteract the harm caused by “bad weave memes.”

The Bottom Line

“Bad weave memes” are harmful, dehumanizing, and need to stop. As a society, we need to do better at valuing Black women and their beauty, regardless of their hair choices. By calling out harmful memes, supporting Black women-owned businesses, and amplifying Black women’s voices, we can work towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
