Back in 2018, Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, released his hit song “This Is America,” a powerful commentary on gun violence and racism in the United States. Fast forward to 2023 and it seems the song has found new life in an unexpected place – Fortnite.
The Birth of the Meme
The “This Is America” Fortnite meme started when a player named Faze Clan uploaded a video of his character doing the iconic dance moves from the music video while playing the popular battle royale game. The video quickly went viral and started a trend that took over social media.
Soon, other players started uploading their own videos of their Fortnite characters doing the “This Is America” dance, and the meme became a sensation. It wasn’t long before celebrities and influencers joined in on the fun, further fueling the meme’s popularity.

Negative Reactions
“I’m not a fan of the ‘This Is America’ Fortnite meme. I think it trivializes the important message behind the original song and video. It’s a shame that people are more interested in doing silly dances than addressing the issues that inspired the song in the first place.” – @music_lover_123
“I understand that the meme is supposed to be fun and harmless, but I just can’t get behind it. The original ‘This Is America’ was such a powerful statement, and I think this meme takes away from that. It’s not something I can support.” – @activist_4change
