The Origins of the Meme
The first “meme de billete de 20” appeared on social media in early 2023, and quickly gained popularity among Mexican users. The image features the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo on the front of the 20-peso bill, with the caption “Cuando te das cuenta que ya no tienes dinero para comprar tacos” (When you realize you don’t have enough money to buy tacos).
From there, the trend took off, with users creating their own versions of the meme with different captions and scenarios. Some examples include “Cuando te das cuenta que faltan dos semanas para el próximo pago” (When you realize it’s two weeks until your next paycheck) and “Cuando te dicen que el precio del aguacate subió de nuevo” (When you’re told the price of avocados went up again).
The Popularity of the Meme
The “meme de billete de 20” trend quickly spread beyond Mexico, with social media users in other Spanish-speaking countries also creating their own versions. The memes have become a way for people to express their frustrations about everyday situations in a humorous way, and have even been used by brands for marketing purposes.
“I love these memes! They’re so relatable and always make me laugh,” says Ana Gonzalez, a social media user from Mexico City. “It’s amazing to see how quickly they’ve become popular, and how they’ve spread to other countries.”
Others have criticized the trend, arguing that it perpetuates negative stereotypes about Mexicans and their financial situation. “I don’t think it’s funny to make fun of people who are struggling to make ends meet,” says Carlos Sanchez, a community activist in Tijuana. “We should be using our creativity to uplift each other, not tear each other down.”
The Future of the Meme
As with any internet trend, it’s impossible to predict how long the “meme de billete de 20” will remain popular. However, some social media experts believe that the trend will continue to grow and evolve over time.
“These memes are a great example of how people use social media to connect with each other and share their experiences,” says Maria Rodriguez, a social media strategist based in Mexico City. “As long as people continue to find them funny and relatable, I think we’ll see more and more of them in the future.”
So whether you love them or hate them, it’s clear that “memes de billetes de 20” are here to stay – at least for now.
