In late 2022, Bungie released the highly anticipated weapon, Prometheus Lens, in their popular first-person shooter game, Destiny 2. The gun quickly became a fan favorite due to its unique abilities and high damage output. However, its popularity skyrocketed when a player posted a meme on social media, showcasing the gun’s power in a hilarious and absurd way. This meme started a trend that took the Destiny 2 community by storm, but like all memes, its popularity eventually dwindled.

The Birth of the Prometheus Lens Meme
The Prometheus Lens meme originated when a player posted a video of themselves using the gun in a game mode called Gambit. In Gambit, two teams of players compete to defeat waves of enemies and collect motes to deposit into a bank. The first team to fill their bank wins the round. In the video, the player equipped the Prometheus Lens and proceeded to melt the opposing team in seconds, leaving them stunned and unable to collect any motes. The video went viral, and players started to experiment with the gun in various game modes.
The meme took on a life of its own when players started to create funny videos and memes showcasing the gun’s power. One popular meme featured a player using the Prometheus Lens to destroy a literal mountain. Another showed a team of players using the gun to defeat a raid boss in record time. The memes were hilarious, and the community couldn’t get enough of them.
The Fallout
However, the fun came to an end when Bungie realized that the Prometheus Lens was unintentionally overpowered. The gun’s damage output was vastly greater than any other weapon in the game, making it a must-have for any player looking to dominate in PvP. Bungie quickly nerfed the gun, reducing its damage output to a more reasonable level. This change effectively killed the Prometheus Lens meme, as the gun was no longer as powerful as it once was.
The Legacy of the Prometheus Lens Meme
Despite its short-lived popularity, the Prometheus Lens meme left a lasting impact on the Destiny 2 community. It brought players together and provided a much-needed break from the game’s serious nature. It also showcased the power of social media and how a simple video can quickly turn into a viral sensation.
Many players still look back on the Prometheus Lens meme with fondness, remembering the hilarity and fun it brought to the game. Some even believe that Bungie intentionally made the gun overpowered to see how the community would react. Whatever the case may be, the Prometheus Lens meme will forever be a part of Destiny 2’s history.

The Prometheus Lens meme may have come and gone, but its impact on the Destiny 2 community will never be forgotten.
