Back in 2023, a meme based on a scene from the anime “Fate/Zero” took the internet by storm. The scene in question featured the character Lancer getting killed off in a particularly brutal way, and the meme involved photoshopping Lancer into various situations, always with the caption “Lancer ga shinda” (which roughly translates to “Lancer is dead”). The meme quickly became a sensation, spreading across social media platforms and spawning countless variations.

The Origin of the Meme
The “Lancer ga shinda” meme originated on 4chan’s /a/ board, where users would post edited images of Lancer being killed off in various ways. The meme gained traction on Twitter and Reddit, where it quickly spread to other fandoms and communities. People started creating their own versions of the meme, with Lancer appearing in everything from movie posters to historical paintings.
Reaction from Fans
The “Lancer ga shinda” meme quickly became a favorite among anime fans, who appreciated the humor and absurdity of the concept. Some fans even started creating their own fan art and cosplay based on the meme. Others, however, felt that the meme was disrespectful to the character and the anime. They argued that the meme made light of Lancer’s death and undermined the emotional impact of the scene.
“I understand that it’s just a joke, but as a fan of Fate/Zero, I found the ‘Lancer ga shinda’ meme to be in poor taste,” said Reddit user FateFan123. “Lancer’s death was a pivotal moment in the anime, and I feel like the meme kind of cheapens that.”
The Meme Goes Mainstream
Despite the criticism, the “Lancer ga shinda” meme continued to gain popularity. It started appearing in mainstream media, with news outlets and talk shows referencing it in their coverage. Some companies even started using the meme in their advertising, hoping to capitalize on its popularity.
Response from the Anime Community
The anime community had mixed feelings about the meme’s mainstream success. Some fans were excited to see anime memes gaining more widespread recognition, while others felt that the meme’s popularity was a sign of anime’s continued marginalization in mainstream culture.
“I’m happy that anime memes are getting more attention, but I also worry that the ‘Lancer ga shinda’ meme will reinforce negative stereotypes about anime fans being obsessed with violence and death,” said Twitter user AnimeFan456.
The Meme Fades Away
As with all memes, the “Lancer ga shinda” meme eventually started to lose steam. People moved on to other memes and trends, and the once-ubiquitous “Lancer ga shinda” images became less and less common. Some fans lamented the meme’s decline, while others were happy to see it go.
Final Thoughts
The “Lancer ga shinda” meme was a unique phenomenon that captured the internet’s attention for a brief period of time. While it had its detractors, it also had its devoted fans, who found humor and entertainment in the concept. Ultimately, the meme’s success was a testament to the power of internet culture and the ability of memes to spread and evolve in ways that are unpredictable and often surprising.
“I think the ‘Lancer ga shinda’ meme was a fascinating cultural moment,” said Twitter user MemeKing789. “It showed how something as obscure as a scene from an anime could become a global sensation overnight. It’s a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of internet culture.”
