The Classics
Some of the most popular cat memes of 2021 were actually classics that have been around for years. Grumpy Cat and Nyan Cat both made a comeback, as did the “I Should Buy a Boat” cat. These memes are timeless and always manage to make us smile, no matter how many times we’ve seen them.
“I love all cat memes, but there’s something special about the classics,” says Sarah, a cat lover from California. “They’re like old friends who always know how to cheer you up.”
The Pandemic Memes
2021 was a year unlike any other, and cat memes reflected that. Many of the most popular memes featured cats in masks or dealing with the realities of life during a pandemic. One meme that gained particular popularity showed a cat sitting on a laptop with the caption “My coworker won’t stop staring at me.”
“As someone who spent most of 2021 working from home with my cat, I related to those memes so much,” says Tom, a marketing professional from New York. “They captured the weirdness of the past year in a way that was both funny and comforting.”
The TikTok Cats
TikTok has quickly become a hub for cat content, and 2021 saw the rise of several feline stars on the platform. Cats like Smoothie, Hamilton the Hipster Cat, and Loki the Sphynx became viral sensations, with their unique looks and charming personalities capturing the hearts of millions.
“I love following cat accounts on TikTok,” says Emily, a college student from Texas. “They always brighten my day and make me smile. Plus, it’s fun to see what they’re up to when they’re not napping.”
The Political Cats
2021 was also a year of political turmoil, and cat memes didn’t shy away from the topic. Many popular memes featured cats in political situations, such as a cat sitting behind a desk with the caption “I am in charge now.” These memes provided a much-needed laugh during a stressful time.
“I think cat memes are a great way to cope with the stress of the news cycle,” says John, a journalist from Washington D.C. “They remind us that even in the midst of chaos, there’s always something to laugh about.”
The Future of Cat Memes
As we look ahead to 2022 and beyond, it’s clear that cat memes will continue to be a beloved part of internet culture. Whether it’s through classic memes, TikTok stars, or political commentary, cats will always find a way to make us laugh.
