The year 2023 marks the 5th anniversary of the release of the horror movie Crawl, which captivated audiences with its thrilling storyline and terrifying alligator attacks. But aside from its success at the box office, the film also sparked a viral trend that took social media by storm – the Crawl movie meme.

What is the Crawl Movie Meme?
The Crawl movie meme started as a simple joke about the film’s plot, which revolves around a young woman who becomes trapped in her flooded home during a Category 5 hurricane, only to find herself fighting for survival against a pack of hungry alligators. The meme typically features a photoshopped image of the movie’s poster, with humorous captions that play on the film’s premise.
For instance, one popular version of the meme shows the poster with the caption “When you’re trying to leave work early but your boss asks you to stay and finish some paperwork,” while another reads “Me trying to get out of bed on a Monday morning.”
The Spread of the Crawl Movie Meme
The Crawl movie meme quickly gained traction on social media, as users shared and retweeted their favorite versions of the joke. Soon, celebrities and influencers also got in on the trend, creating their own variations of the meme and helping to spread it even further.
The meme’s popularity even prompted the film’s lead actress, Kaya Scodelario, to share her thoughts on the trend during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I think it’s hilarious,” she said. “I love that people are having fun with it and finding a way to connect with the movie.”
The Backlash Against the Crawl Movie Meme
However, as with any viral trend, the Crawl movie meme also had its detractors. Some critics argued that the meme trivialized the film’s serious subject matter, which dealt with themes of survival and perseverance in the face of danger.
Others accused the meme of being insensitive to the real-life victims of natural disasters, who have experienced similar situations without the benefit of Hollywood-style heroics. As one Twitter user wrote, “The Crawl movie meme is funny until you remember that people actually die in hurricanes and floods.”
The Legacy of the Crawl Movie Meme
Despite the backlash, the Crawl movie meme continued to thrive on social media for several months, with new variations and interpretations popping up regularly. However, as with most viral trends, its popularity eventually waned, and the meme faded into obscurity.
Today, the Crawl movie meme remains a footnote in internet history, a reminder of the power of social media to create and spread trends at lightning speed. Whether it will be remembered as a harmless joke or a tasteless fad is up to individual interpretation, but one thing is certain – it will always be a part of the legacy of the film that inspired it.
