The Origin of the Meme
The “Andy’s Coming” meme was inspired by the Toy Story movies, where the character Andy would yell out the phrase to his toys before leaving the room. The toys would then drop to the ground and play dead until Andy returned. The meme started to gain traction on social media in 2013, with people recreating the scene in public places like malls and theme parks. It quickly became a viral sensation, with thousands of people participating and sharing their videos online.
The Dangers of the Meme
As the “Andy’s Coming” meme grew in popularity, so did its dangers. People were dropping to the ground without warning, causing chaos in crowded places like malls and airports. The sudden collapse of large groups of people also posed a serious safety risk, with people getting trampled or injured. The trend became so problematic that Disney, the owner of the Toy Story franchise, issued a statement asking people to stop participating in the meme.
“We love that Toy Story fans are having fun with the characters and the franchise, but we also want to make sure that everyone stays safe,” the statement read. “Please refrain from dropping to the ground in public places and causing unnecessary panic.”
The Decline of the Meme
Despite Disney’s warning, the “Andy’s Coming” meme continued to spread online for a few more years. But eventually, it started to lose its appeal as people became more aware of the dangers it posed. The trend slowly faded away, and by the end of the decade, it was no longer a popular meme.
