The Origins of Pepe Memes on Reddit
Pepe the Frog was created by artist Matt Furie in 2005 as part of his comic series ‘Boy’s Club’. The character gained popularity on internet forums and became a staple of meme culture. Its use on Reddit began in the early 2010s, and it quickly became a popular meme format.
Pepe memes were initially used in a harmless way, often as reaction images or to express a particular emotion. However, as with any meme format, it was only a matter of time before people began using it to express more controversial opinions.
The Use of Pepe Memes in Politics
One of the most significant controversies surrounding Pepe memes on Reddit was their use in political contexts, particularly during the 2016 US presidential election. The character was adopted by the alt-right movement and became associated with white nationalism and other far-right ideologies.
Many people on Reddit were outraged by this development, and the site’s administrators took steps to ban the use of Pepe memes in certain contexts. However, this only served to make the character more popular among certain groups, who saw it as a symbol of resistance against what they saw as censorship.
The Downfall of Pepe Memes on Reddit
The controversy surrounding Pepe memes eventually led to their downfall on Reddit. In 2017, the site banned the r/the_donald subreddit, which was a hub for far-right discussion and the use of Pepe memes.
While some people were upset by this decision, others saw it as a necessary step to combat hate speech and other harmful content on the site. However, the ban did not completely eliminate the use of Pepe memes on Reddit, and the character can still be found on various subreddits to this day.
