The Beginning
The first David De Gea memes emerged in 2011, his debut season with Manchester United. Fans and critics alike were quick to point out his weaknesses, particularly his struggles with high balls and his tendency to parry shots back into play. These weaknesses were soon immortalized in the form of memes, which quickly spread across social media.
One of the earliest and most popular De Gea memes was “De Gea saves like a fax machine”. This meme was inspired by a comment made by former United captain Roy Keane, who compared De Gea’s saves to a fax machine. The meme featured a picture of De Gea with a fax machine’s paper tray superimposed over his hands.
Fans’ Reaction
The reaction to the De Gea memes was mixed. Some fans found them hilarious, while others felt that they were unfair and disrespectful to the player. However, De Gea himself seemed unfazed by the memes, stating in an interview that he found some of them amusing.
The Golden Age
The golden age of David De Gea memes was undoubtedly between 2015 and 2018. During this period, De Gea’s performances for Manchester United were nothing short of spectacular, and he was widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. However, even during this period of success, De Gea was not immune to the occasional blunder.
One of the most iconic De Gea memes from this period was “De Gea’s distribution”. This meme featured a picture of De Gea looking puzzled, with the caption “De Gea’s distribution” superimposed over it. The meme poked fun at De Gea’s struggles with kicking the ball accurately.
The Fans Speak
“As a Manchester United fan, I loved the De Gea memes. They were a great way to lighten the mood after a bad performance,” said John, a United supporter. “But I always felt a bit sorry for De Gea. He’s a great player and didn’t deserve to be mocked like that.”
The Decline
The decline of David De Gea memes began in 2019, when his performances for Manchester United began to dip. De Gea was no longer making the same number of spectacular saves that he had become known for, and he was making more mistakes than ever before. As a result, the memes began to lose their appeal.
One of the final De Gea memes to gain widespread attention was “De Gea’s contract negotiations”. This meme featured a picture of De Gea looking stressed, with the caption “De Gea’s contract negotiations” superimposed over it. The meme referenced the long and drawn-out contract negotiations between De Gea and Manchester United.
The End of an Era
“It’s a shame that the De Gea memes have disappeared. They were a great way to bond with other fans and to show our support for the team,” said Emily, a United supporter. “But I think it’s time to move on. De Gea is still a great player, and we should focus on supporting him rather than making fun of him.”
The Legacy
Despite their decline in popularity, David De Gea memes will always be a part of internet culture. They provided a glimpse into the world of football fandom and united fans from all over the world. And while the memes may have ended, the memories will live on.
