In 2023, it’s hard to imagine a time when the internet didn’t exist. It’s even harder to imagine a time when memes didn’t exist. But back in the early 2000s, the concept of a meme was still in its infancy. That all changed in 2007, when a certain purple-clad musician became the unlikely star of one of the internet’s first viral memes: the Prince meme GIF.

What is the Prince Meme GIF?
In case you somehow missed it, the Prince meme GIF features a clip of Prince performing at the 2007 Super Bowl halftime show. In the clip, he’s playing the guitar and doing his best to look cool, when suddenly he throws his guitar up in the air…and it never comes back down. The clip is only a few seconds long, but it’s endlessly loopable, making it perfect for use as a reaction GIF.
It’s hard to explain exactly why the Prince meme GIF became so popular. Maybe it’s because Prince was such an iconic figure, or maybe it’s because the clip is just so absurd. Whatever the reason, the Prince meme GIF quickly became one of the most widely-used reaction GIFs on the internet.
Why did the Prince Meme GIF become so popular?
There are a few reasons why the Prince meme GIF became so popular. For one thing, it’s incredibly versatile. You can use it to express shock, confusion, excitement, or just about any other emotion you can think of. Plus, it’s just plain funny. There’s something inherently absurd about watching a guitar disappear into the sky like that.
But perhaps the biggest reason why the Prince meme GIF became so popular is that it was just so unexpected. No one watching the Super Bowl halftime show that year could have predicted that Prince’s guitar toss would become one of the defining moments of the internet age. But that’s the thing about memes: they have a way of taking on a life of their own.

Since it first went viral in 2007, the Prince meme GIF has been used in countless ways. It’s been used as a reaction GIF on social media, as a punchline in memes, and even as a shorthand for the absurdity of internet culture itself.
Some people have even taken the Prince meme GIF and turned it into something entirely new. For example, there’s a popular YouTube video that features the clip set to the tune of “All Star” by Smash Mouth. It’s a weird combination, but somehow it works.
